Brenda Matanga holds a Bachelor of Law Honours Degree (LLB) from the University of
Zimbabwe and a Masters in Intellectual Property Law (LLM) from the University of Turin
(Italy) in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).A legal
practitioner of 19 years standing who has built a legal practice with global recognition. She
has extensive experience in commercial law and has over the years distinguished herself as
an intellectual property law specialist Attorney.Brenda has advised and assisted global
companies in IP acquisition, prosecution, strategy and has helped resolved several IP
disputes,setting leading legal precedents in the process .As a leading IP champion in
Zimbabwe, she has helped shape the industry’s growth and actively empowers start-ups
with dedicated IP services and trainings in intellectual property law.
Through her distinguished status as a former President of the Zimbabwe Institute of Patents
and Trademarks Agents (ZIPTA) and role as outgoing Chairperson of the Africa Regional
Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) Working Group (which is amending the
organisation’s legal instruments), Brenda has been in the front line of advocating and
spearheading necessary legislative reforms in IP laws in Zimbabwe and the African
continent at large. She is a former Councillor of the Law Society and has served on a few
other institutional and private company boards in Zimbabwe.
A member of the International Trademarks Association (INTA) who has served as a
committee member for the “Unreal Campaign”, Brands for a Better Society committee and
more recently on INTA’s Africa Global Advisory Council.She currently serves on the Building
Bridges Committee where she Chairs the Consumer Association SubCommitee.She
consults on various IP projects across the region and has presented papers on several
global platforms.
