An Overview of Pursuing Research Grants

About the Course:

This session provides valuable insight into the mission, scope, extent of funding, phases of funding, and terms of funding associated with Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

This course discusses what applicants can do to improve their odds of receiving grants. Included in the session are a list of the Top 10 Reasons Proposals are rejected as well as 10 Tips for Successful Applications.

The following are among the issues discussed during this webinar:

• How much time should applicants budget when pursuing grants? How much time can consultants save applicants during the application process?
• Through which channels should applications be submitted?
• Can the same proposal be sent to multiple agencies?
• Must the applicant be a registered company?
• What are some of the specific requirements associated with the appearance of the pages in proposals that applicants must be aware of?
• How much of a business must be owned by US individuals to qualify for SBIR and STTR grants?
• To what extent can applying companies be owned by venture capitalists, private equity firms and hedge funds to qualify for funding?
• What employment arrangements by the principal investigators are required?
• What are some of the conflicts that may arise with faculty members applying for grants? How can these potential conflicts be avoided or addressed?
• How are rights to resulting intellectual property addressed when SBIR / STTR grants are provided?
• What happens to the receiver of grants if the venture fails?

Course Leader: Kris Johansen, Ph.D., M.B.A., SBIR/STTR Program Administrator, Iowa State University

Kris Johansen earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Missouri, and an M.B.A. from Iowa State University. Kris worked as a Senior Scientist at Xtrana, Inc., in Denver, CO, where she helped develop nucleic acid extraction kits as well as nucleic acid-based assays for the detection of food and environmental pathogens. Kris was also a Senior Scientist at Invenux, Inc. in Denver, CO, where she was involved in the development of drug lead compounds using a proprietary molecular evolution technology. At both Xtrana and Invenux, Kris participated in the preparation of multiple successful Phase I and Phase II SBIR grant applications to the USDA and NIH.

Dr. Johansen presently serves as the SBIR/STTR Program Administrator in the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer at Iowa State University, where she assists small businesses in identifying funding opportunities and preparing grant proposals. In addition, she is also involved in technology evaluation and marketing Iowa State University technologies available for licensing.
