InterDigital Accuses TCL and Hisense of Patent Infringement in TV Sales

American technology company InterDigital Inc. has filed separate federal district court lawsuits against Chinese TV manufacturers Hisense Co. Ltd. and TCL Technology Group Corp., alleging that the companies are selling televisions that infringe on its video coding patents. The legal action is part of a global litigation strategy by InterDigital to protect its intellectual property rights.
InterDigital’s complaints target specific video coding patents that it claims are being violated by Hisense and TCL. The patents in question include:
- 10,250,877 – Method and device for coding an image block, corresponding decoding method and decoding device
- 11,695,962 – Encoding and decoding methods and corresponding devices
- 11,399,168 – Method for encoding and method for decoding a color transform and corresponding devices
- 8,085,846 – Method and apparatus for decoding hybrid intra-inter coded blocks
- 9,294,784 – Method and apparatus for region-based filter parameter selection for de-artifact filtering
- 9,654,751 – Method, apparatus and system for providing color grading for displays
The lawsuits were filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Legal representation for InterDigital is being provided by Alston & Bird and Dacus Law Firm.
Other companies named in the complaints include Netflix Inc. and YouTube Inc. The legal battle also involves government agencies such as the European Union and the Unified Patent Court.
