During a 12-year officer career at the German airforce, Olaf studied electrical engineering with focus on IT and obtained his diploma in computer-simulated steering of phased-array antennas. His broad technical knoweldge and ability to explain complex technical contexts stem from many years of experience as a teacher and director at a technical school of the German airforce.
After more than 30 years of experience as a patent professional, he has drafted, prosecuted and defended many hundreds of patents at the European Patent Office and the German Patent and Trademark Office in all fields of electrical and mechanical engineering and physics.

Furthermore, Olaf takes a particular interest in the issues surrounding patentability of software and business methods and has many years of experience giving expert opinions, in particular Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) opinions, qualitative and monetary valuation of all kinds of intellectual property rights, and evaluation of standard relevant patents. He was member of a working group of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), that set up the official German standard DIN 77100 for monetary patent valuation.
Olaf is also a member of the European Patent Litigator Association (EPLIT) and of the official working group on patents and utility models of the German Association for Intellectual Property Law (GRUR), and is a Bavarian delegate of the Federal Association of German Patent Attorneys (BDPA).
