Lululemon Successfully Appeals $355,000 Verdict in Nike Flyknit Patent Case

Lululemon USA Inc. has emerged victorious in its legal battle against Nike Inc. over patent infringement claims related to knit sneakers. A federal judge recently overturned a jury verdict that initially ordered Lululemon to pay $355,000 in damages to Nike.

The dispute centered around parts of Nike’s US Patent No. 8,266,749, which the jury believed Lululemon had infringed upon. However, Judge Arun Subramanian of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that these specific patent claims were invalid due to being obvious.

In his opinion, Judge Subramanian stated that Nike is not entitled to any damages from Lululemon. The court not only nullified the damages award but also dismissed Nike’s request to increase the amount.

The initial jury verdict, issued in March 2025, has now been overturned in favor of Lululemon following the judge's decision.
