Brainbase, a technology startup headquartered in Los Angeles with a development team in Estonia, announced the completion of a $1 million seed funding round to advance its innovative intellectual property (IP) licensing platform. Founded in 2016 by Nate Cavanaugh, Karl Johan Vallner, and Nikolai Tolkatshjov, Brainbase is building a comprehensive product ecosystem designed to revolutionize how businesses manage and monetize their IP assets globally.
The funding round was led by Tera Ventures, with participation from Sterling Road and angel investors including Severin Hacker, Andrew Rabin, and Hamid Barkhordar. Stanislav Ivanov, Founding Partner at Tera Ventures, expressed enthusiasm for Brainbase’s mission, highlighting the company’s potential to increase efficiency and expand the licensing market. He also noted the strength of the founding team, which combines American and Estonian expertise.
Brainbase’s initial offering, Brainbase Assist, provides companies with a robust toolset to manage collaboration, sales, royalty reporting, smart contract administration, secure digital asset management, and advanced analytics. These analytics cover critical metrics such as sales performance and rights availability, enabling licensors and licensees to optimize their IP portfolios and licensing strategies.
In addition to Assist, Brainbase introduced Marketplace, a flagship platform that facilitates the entire licensing deal lifecycle online. Marketplace enables licensors and licensees to showcase brands and products, conduct search and discovery, initiate inquiries, execute standardized licensing agreements, complete deal signings, process royalty payments, and manage licenses—all within a secure, legally sound environment.
A demonstration reviewed by Intellectual Property Watch showcased Marketplace’s user-friendly interface, which features tailored product displays for vetted clients. The platform supports secure interactions, allowing companies to manage inquiries from verified prospects and seamlessly progress to formal IP and licensing agreements. Real-time performance metrics further empower users to monitor and enhance their licensing activities.
Brainbase has already secured partnerships with several prominent global brands and institutions, including Shell, Kelloggs, Technicolor, J.D. Power, Billboard, Electrolux, Entrepreneur Magazine, Ohio State University, and the University of Utah, alongside over a dozen leading agencies and licensees. These collaborations underscore the platform’s growing acceptance and potential impact in the IP licensing sector.
Nate Cavanaugh, Brainbase’s co-founder and CEO, emphasized the company’s vision: “We are building an end-to-end product ecosystem that gives companies new ways to manage and monetize their intellectual property through licensing.” He noted widespread dissatisfaction within the licensing industry regarding existing tools and expressed confidence that the new funding would accelerate product scaling and exploration of additional verticals as part of Brainbase’s comprehensive full-stack strategy.
By integrating advanced technology with legal expertise—developed in consultation with top industry lawyers on model contracts and licensing issues—Brainbase aims to address longstanding inefficiencies in IP licensing. The platform’s combination of collaboration tools, secure digital asset management, and automated contract workflows positions it as a potential game-changer for licensors and licensees seeking to streamline operations and expand market reach.
