China Leads Global Patent Filings in 2024 with Nearly Half of Worldwide Applications

China has emerged as the preeminent force in global patent filings in 2024, submitting nearly half of all patent applications worldwide, according to a recent report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This milestone highlights China’s expanding role in global innovation and intellectual property activity.

The data shows that China issued over 1 million patents in 2024, more than three times the number granted by the United States, which stood at 319,815. This represents a substantial increase for China, with approximately 124,000 more patents granted compared to 2023. In contrast, the US saw a modest rise of 4,570 patents, marking a 27-fold difference in growth between the two countries.

Globally, innovators filed a record-breaking 3.7 million patent applications in 2024, reflecting a 4.9 percent increase from the previous year. This marks the fifth consecutive year of growth in patent filings worldwide. Additionally, an estimated 2.1 million patents were granted globally during the same period.

China’s patent filings grew by 9 percent year-on-year, adding about 153,000 applications compared to 2023. The country’s share of the global total has steadily increased over the past decade, rising from 34.6 percent in 2014 to 49.1 percent in 2024.

This surge in patent activity underscores China’s strategic emphasis on innovation and intellectual property development. The country’s rapid growth in patent filings and grants reflects its commitment to advancing technology and securing intellectual property rights on a global scale.

Meanwhile, the United States, while still a major player in patent activity, has experienced comparatively slower growth in patent grants. The data indicates a widening gap between China and the US in terms of patent output, signaling a shift in the global innovation landscape.
