Choate Hall & Stewart LLP announced the appointment of Marta Garcia as Principal in its Intellectual Property Litigation practice, effective May 2026. Garcia joins the Boston-based firm from Finnegan, bringing a wealth of experience in managing complex patent and intellectual property litigation across the technology and life sciences industries.

Garcia’s technical expertise stems from her academic background, holding a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She earned her Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and California. Additionally, Garcia is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Throughout her career, Garcia has handled all phases of patent litigation, including pre-suit analysis, case strategy development, dispositive motion briefing, fact and expert discovery, and trial preparation. She has also represented clients in post-grant proceedings such as inter partes review, offering counsel on patent strategy, due diligence, and risk assessment.

Sophie Wang, Co-Head of Choate’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group, highlighted Garcia’s addition as a strategic enhancement to the firm’s IP litigation capabilities. Wang stated, “Marta brings a sophisticated combination of trial experience, technical fluency, and strategic insight that will immediately strengthen our already robust IP litigation bench. Her experience in complex patent disputes is highly aligned with our clients’ needs, and we are delighted to have her join our team.”

Garcia expressed enthusiasm about her new role at Choate, noting the firm’s strong platform for handling complex, high-impact disputes. “I’m excited to join Choate’s highly regarded IP litigation team,” she said. “I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across practices to deliver results for clients facing critical patent challenges.”

Beyond her legal practice, Garcia is actively involved in professional and community organizations. She serves as Chair of the Boston Public Library Board of Trustees and holds board positions with Hill House, the Region I Board of the Hispanic National Bar Association, and the Boston Children’s Museum President’s Council. She is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Boston Intellectual Property Law Association.

Choate Hall & Stewart LLP is recognized nationally and internationally for its focused legal practices, including intellectual property, complex investigations and litigation, finance and restructuring, private equity and middle market mergers and acquisitions, and wealth management.
