Irvine, California – April 7, 2025: The Daily Journal has included Crowell & Moring partners Kent B. Goss and Jon Gurka in its prestigious 2025 list of Top Intellectual Property Lawyers in California. This annual recognition highlights attorneys who have made significant contributions to the field of intellectual property law over the past year.
Kent B. Goss, a first-chair trial attorney with more than 35 years of experience, specializes in intellectual property matters, technology litigation, and complex high-stakes disputes. Among his recent notable cases, Goss represented an aerospace company in a protracted $600 million trade secret litigation involving avionics systems. The seven-year-long dispute presented formidable challenges, including managing over a terabyte of data and addressing adverse documents. Through strategic litigation efforts, Goss and the Crowell team successfully reduced the client’s potential liability from $600 million to $16 million.
In another significant matter, Goss was retained shortly before trial to defend an airplane engine manufacturer in a trademark infringement case. This litigation was particularly challenging because summary judgment on liability had already been entered against the client prior to his involvement.
Reflecting on his recent workload, Goss told The Daily Journal, “The last few years have been marked by a series of high-pressure trials, including at least three jury trials in trademark and trade secret cases, along with several arbitrations.”
Jon Gurka brings over 30 years of experience as a patent litigator with a broad practice encompassing patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright, trade secret, unfair competition, and breach of contract disputes. He frequently handles cases involving complex technologies and serves as lead counsel in multiple high-stakes matters.
Currently, Gurka represents Shoulder Innovations in a patent infringement lawsuit against competitor Catalyst Orthoscience concerning reverse shoulder arthroplasty implants. He also leads Advanced Cluster Systems’ patent infringement actions against Intel and AMD, which involve cluster computing technologies.
In 2024, Gurka successfully represented Callicity LLC in a trademark dispute that resulted in the surrender of a competitor’s trademark registration and the transfer of their domain name. More recently, he represented Lund Motion Products before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in a dispute against a Chinese manufacturer and several distributors over automated retractable vehicle steps.
In his interview with The Daily Journal, Gurka stated, “Virtually all the patent litigation cases that I handle involve numerous asserted patents involving complex patented technologies. I embrace the challenges posed by these large, complex cases.”
