Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Mohammed Al-Swailem serves as the chief executive of the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority, spearheading the Kingdom’s efforts to enhance its intellectual property infrastructure and international cooperation. On Wednesday in Riyadh, Dr. Al-Swailem welcomed Peter Mehravari, the United States intellectual property attache responsible for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Their discussions centered on avenues to develop and strengthen collaboration in the field of intellectual property, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fostering innovation and protecting IP rights.

Dr. Al-Swailem holds a Ph.D. in biotechnology and genetic engineering from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. His academic and research credentials include work in genomics, peritomics, biosafety, and genetic modification, underscoring his deep expertise in cutting-edge scientific fields.

Beyond his current leadership role, Dr. Al-Swailem has served as an adviser to prominent international organizations such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and UNESCO. His tenure includes chairing the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee at UNESCO from 2009 to 2011, as well as leading the National Bioethics Committee (NCBE) in Saudi Arabia.

Since 2009, he has been vice president for Scientific Research Support at King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology, a key institution driving Saudi Arabia’s research and innovation agenda. Additionally, he spent a decade supervising the Institute of Natural Resources and Environmental Research, further demonstrating his broad scientific leadership.

Dr. Al-Swailem’s governance experience extends to healthcare and technology sectors, having served on the board of directors at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center and the Communications and Information Technology Commission. He also chaired the supervisory committee responsible for preparing the strategic plan for traffic safety, illustrating his involvement in multidisciplinary national initiatives.

The recent meeting with the US IP attache aligns with Saudi Arabia’s strategic vision to bolster intellectual property protections and international partnerships, which are critical to supporting the country’s growing innovation economy.

This engagement is part of a broader regional context where intellectual property frameworks are increasingly recognized as vital to economic diversification and technological advancement. Saudi Arabia’s proactive stance under Dr. Al-Swailem’s leadership signals its intent to be a key player in the global IP landscape.

Other notable figures featured alongside Dr. Al-Swailem in recent reports include Dr. Yahya bin Junaid, head of the Saudi Center for Research and Intercommunication Knowledge, and Dr. Majid Ibrahim Al-Fayyadh, CEO of King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center in Riyadh, highlighting the Kingdom’s focus on integrating research, healthcare, and intellectual property development.
