Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Mohammed Al-Swailem Leads Saudi Intellectual Property Authority, Strengthening Global IP Collaboration

Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Mohammed Al-Swailem serves as the chief executive of the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority, playing a pivotal role in shaping the Kingdom’s intellectual property framework. On Wednesday in Riyadh, he welcomed Peter Mehravari, the US intellectual property attache responsible for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Their meeting focused on reviewing current collaboration efforts in intellectual property and exploring avenues to develop and enhance these partnerships further.

Al-Swailem holds a doctorate from the University of Sheffield, UK, specializing in biotechnology and genetic engineering. His academic and research pursuits encompass genomics, peritomics, biosafety, and genetic modification, underscoring his scientific expertise.

Beyond academia, Dr. Al-Swailem has contributed extensively to international organizations. He has served as an adviser to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and UNESCO, reflecting his engagement with global IP and ethical standards.

Since 2009, he has been the vice president for Scientific Research Support at King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology, a leading Saudi research institution. Prior to this, he spent a decade supervising the Institute of Natural Resources and Environmental Research.

His leadership roles extend to bioethics, having chaired UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee from 2009 to 2011 and the National Bioethics Committee (NCBE) in Saudi Arabia. He also led the supervisory committee responsible for preparing the Kingdom’s strategic plan for traffic safety.

Dr. Al-Swailem’s governance experience includes board memberships at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center and the Communications and Information Technology Commission, highlighting his multidisciplinary influence across science, health, and technology sectors.
