Dr Johanna von Braun has recently joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) to conduct advanced research in intellectual property law, with a particular emphasis on its effects in sub-Saharan Africa. Holding a BA (Hons) in international relations with development studies from the University of Sussex, a master's degree in international affairs from Columbia University, and a PhD in Law from Queen Mary College, University of London, von Braun brings a multidisciplinary perspective to her work.
Expressing her motivation, von Braun stated, "I wanted to do further research, with a strong policy orientation, in the field of intellectual property law and its implications in sub-Saharan Africa. When the opportunity arose at UCT to come here, I took it."
Her research agenda concentrates on two key areas within the broader field of intellectual property rights (IPRs) and development. The first area explores the intersection of IPRs and public health, specifically how intellectual property frameworks influence access to affordable medicines in developing countries. This topic is critical given ongoing global debates about pharmaceutical patents and health equity.
The second focus area investigates issues surrounding the ownership of biological resources and traditional knowledge. This includes examining legal frameworks that govern the protection and use of indigenous knowledge and biodiversity, which are vital for sustainable development and conservation efforts in the region.
Von Braun's professional background includes extensive experience working with civil society organisations engaged in IPRs, trade, and sustainable development. Notably, she contributed to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development's Programme on IPRs and Sustainable Development.
Since her arrival in South Africa in January 2009, von Braun has collaborated with Natural Justice, a South African legal non-profit organisation dedicated to implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity in Southern Africa. This partnership underscores her commitment to applying legal research to practical challenges faced by communities and ecosystems.
In addition to her research and consultancy roles, von Braun teaches a course on intellectual property and development at UCT, helping to cultivate the next generation of scholars and practitioners in this critical field.
Looking ahead, von Braun remains open to various career pathways, stating, "I believe my stay here will allow me to either remain in academia or work in my field for NGOs or international organisations. But for the time being, I am keeping my doors open."
