European Patent Filings Surge in Advanced Materials, Coatings, and Food Technology Sectors

European patent filing trends reveal where businesses are focusing their investments and seeking intellectual property protection, particularly within chemistry-related technologies. Over the last decade, chemistry-related filings have increased by more than 10%, with three sectors—materials and metallurgy, food technology, and surface technology and coatings—showing the most substantial growth.

The materials and metallurgy sector has seen patent filings rise by nearly 40%, making it one of the fastest-growing areas at the European Patent Office (EPO) within chemistry-related technologies. This surge is driven by long-term factors such as advancements in battery technology, electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy infrastructure, and next-generation electronic devices. These developments create demand for innovative advanced materials, alloys, electronic materials, and specialized manufacturing processes.

From smartphone displays and semiconductor components to battery systems and energy storage technologies, improvements in product performance increasingly depend on breakthroughs in materials science. As governments and industries invest heavily in energy transition and digital transformation, companies are actively seeking patent protection for technologies that enhance performance, efficiency, and durability.

Sustainability also plays a crucial role in shaping innovation priorities. Businesses are investing in lightweight materials, resource-efficient manufacturing, and recycling technologies that support circular economy goals. Innovations related to critical raw materials, substitute materials, and materials recovery have gained importance as companies aim to bolster supply chain resilience and reduce environmental impact.

Simultaneously, advances in additive manufacturing and powder metallurgy are opening new avenues for patent protection. Many innovations intersect materials science, chemistry, engineering, and process technology, generating valuable intellectual property across multiple sectors.

Materials innovation is enabling progress in diverse industries including aerospace, electronics, semiconductors, hydrogen technologies, and medical devices. Consequently, materials and metallurgy have become critical enabling technologies for a wide range of deep tech industries.

The food technology sector, while representing a smaller share of chemistry-related filings, has experienced nearly 25% growth since 2016. This reflects increasing investment and rapid innovation driven by evolving consumer demand focused on health, nutrition, and wellbeing.

Innovation in functional foods, ingredient technologies, and health supplements is creating opportunities for patent protection covering ingredients, compositions, and manufacturing processes. Additionally, advances in alternative proteins, precision fermentation, and sustainable food production methods contribute to rising patent activity.

Research efforts aim to improve taste, texture, nutritional performance, and production efficiency, generating commercially valuable intellectual property. Sustainability remains a major factor, with food manufacturers investing in technologies that reduce waste, enhance resource efficiency, and extend product shelf life.

Progress in processing technologies, enzyme systems, fermentation methods, and ingredient delivery platforms supports the development of more sustainable products without compromising quality. As food innovation becomes increasingly research-intensive, patents are gaining prominence alongside trade secrets and manufacturing know-how, underscoring their growing commercial importance in the sector.

Patent activity in surface technology and coatings has also grown strongly, increasing by approximately 35% between 2016 and 2025. Advanced coatings are vital across industries such as automotive, construction, energy, packaging, electronics, and consumer products, enhancing product performance, durability, and sustainability without altering the base materials.

Environmental and regulatory pressures have driven much of this innovation. Companies are developing alternatives to legacy coating technologies while maintaining high performance, creating significant patent opportunities for novel coating compositions, application methods, and surface treatment processes.

Surface technologies are increasingly important in battery materials, renewable energy systems, and hydrogen technologies. Coatings that improve corrosion resistance, thermal management, barrier performance, and durability offer commercial advantages in these expanding sectors.

A notable trend is the rise of multifunctional coatings that incorporate antimicrobial, self-cleaning, conductive, insulating, or protective properties. These broaden applications across advanced manufacturing and high-value industrial markets.

Like materials science broadly, coatings serve as enabling technologies that support innovation across multiple economic sectors, reinforcing their strategic importance in the evolving European patent landscape.
