Global IP Offices Unite to Promote Gender Equality in Intellectual Property on International Women’s Day

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has reiterated its dedication to enhancing gender equality in the intellectual property (IP) sector, encompassing both its customers and staff. This commitment is part of a broader collaborative effort involving multiple national IP offices aimed at promoting gender parity within the global IP landscape.

In observance of International Women’s Day 2022, themed “Gender Equality for a Sustainable Tomorrow,” the IPO and its partner agencies released a joint statement underscoring the importance of supporting women’s increased participation in developing, commercializing, and distributing innovations and creative works. This collective pledge seeks to build a future that is both sustainable and hopeful.

The statement draws attention to the disproportionate impact of climate change on women, citing United Nations data that indicates women constitute approximately 80% of those displaced by climate-related events. Despite this vulnerability, women’s roles in creating new technologies, products, and processes are vital for mitigating climate change effects. Their entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity are recognized as key drivers of economic growth and cultural vitality.

Globally, women remain underrepresented within the IP system. Patent, trademark, and copyright offices worldwide provide essential resources and support to innovators and creators of all genders, facilitating their navigation and access to IP protections. Through these programs and partnerships, the signatories reaffirm their commitment to achieving gender equality across economies.

The statement emphasizes that true equality can only be realized when the gender composition of innovators and creators engaged in IP mirrors that of society at large. Achieving this balance promises a more sustainable, healthy, and equitable society that benefits everyone.

The joint statement is endorsed by several Latin American IP authorities, including the National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI) of Chile, the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) of Colombia, the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) of Peru, and the National Office of Industrial Property (ONAPI) of the Dominican Republic.

These offices collectively highlight their ongoing efforts to provide inclusive support and resources to all innovators and creators, regardless of gender, reinforcing the global movement toward gender parity in intellectual property.

This initiative aligns with broader international objectives to empower women in innovation sectors, recognizing their indispensable contributions to addressing global challenges such as climate change and economic development.
