HeartSciences Secures U.S. Patent Allowance for AI-Driven ECG Detection of Ventricular Dysfunction

Heart Test Laboratories, Inc., a medical technology company specializing in artificial intelligence-powered ECG analysis, announced on July 11, 2024, that intellectual property exclusively licensed to its subsidiary HeartSciences has been granted a notice of allowance by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent application pertains to the detection of left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction using deep learning algorithms applied to ECG data.

Heart failure (HF) remains a significant global health challenge, impacting approximately 64 million people annually. The condition is associated with high mortality rates, diminished quality of life, and reduced physical capacity, while also imposing substantial financial burdens on healthcare systems worldwide. Despite the prevalence of HF, accessible and cost-effective testing methods for frontline clinicians have been limited.

HeartSciences’ AI-ECG technology aims to address this gap by enabling earlier identification of patients exhibiting signs of ventricular dysfunction. By leveraging deep learning techniques, the company’s algorithms can analyze standard ECGs to detect subtle indicators of LV and RV impairment, facilitating timely referral for additional diagnostic testing and earlier therapeutic intervention.

Andrew Simpson, Chief Executive Officer of HeartSciences, emphasized the strategic importance of the patent allowance, stating, “This patent allowance further expands our extensive AI-ECG IP portfolio. AI-ECG is set to change the detection of heart disease and this latest patent further bolsters value to HeartSciences and our stakeholders.”

The granted patent strengthens HeartSciences’ intellectual property position in the rapidly evolving field of AI-enabled cardiac diagnostics, supporting its mission to transform ECG interpretation and improve patient outcomes through technology-driven innovation.

The significance of this development is underscored by the global burden of heart failure, as detailed in the 2017 Global Burden of Disease Study published in The Lancet, which reported widespread incidence and disability associated with cardiovascular diseases.

HeartSciences continues to build on its AI-ECG platform, contributing to the broader movement toward integrating artificial intelligence into routine clinical cardiology practice. This patent allowance represents a critical milestone in the company’s efforts to commercialize AI-powered tools that enhance early detection and management of heart disease.

The announcement follows a series of recent advancements in cardiac technology, including new patents and strategic collaborations by other companies in the sector, highlighting the dynamic innovation landscape in AI-driven cardiovascular diagnostics.
