The Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s Indian Institute of Rapeseed-Mustard Research (ICAR-IIRMR) in Bharatpur observed World Intellectual Property Day on April 28, 2026, by organizing a dedicated workshop titled “Intellectual Property Rights in Agricultural Research and Management.”
Dr. V. V. Singh, Director of ICAR-IIRMR, delivered the inaugural address emphasizing the growing significance of intellectual property rights within the agricultural research sector. He highlighted the necessity of safeguarding scientific innovations through various IP mechanisms such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights. According to Dr. Singh, these protections are vital to unlocking the commercial potential of innovations and ensuring their broader societal impact.
An expert lecture during the workshop, titled “IPR in Agriculture: Transforming Innovation in India through Patent Protection,” focused on the critical role patents play in agricultural research. The speaker advocated for scientists to integrate patent-related safeguards early in the research process to secure effective protection of their innovations. The session also provided detailed guidance on the patent filing process, emphasizing its long-term advantages for innovators and stakeholders.
The workshop further included an outreach segment that stressed the importance of maintaining quality standards in agricultural products. This focus aims to enhance market competitiveness and foster consumer confidence, which are essential for the successful commercialization of agricultural innovations.
Participants gained valuable insights into the techno-legal challenges faced in protecting intellectual assets within a rapidly evolving innovation ecosystem. The discussions also covered strategic approaches to IP management tailored to the agricultural research context.
The event attracted more than 35 attendees, comprising scientists, technical personnel, and representatives from startups engaged in agricultural innovation. Their active participation underscored the growing awareness and commitment to intellectual property rights in the sector.
This initiative by ICAR-IIRMR aligns with global efforts to promote the understanding and utilization of intellectual property as a tool to drive innovation and economic growth in agriculture.
