India and US Sign MoU to Strengthen Intellectual Property Collaboration

India and the United States have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP). This development follows approval by the Indian Union Cabinet to sign the agreement with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The MoU is designed to facilitate the exchange and dissemination of best practices, experiences, and knowledge related to IP. It aims to increase collaboration between the two countries by promoting interaction among the public, industry players, universities, research and development organizations, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

According to an official communique issued on Thursday, the MoU encompasses cooperation in various areas including training programs, expert exchanges, technical collaborations, and outreach activities. It also covers the sharing of information and best practices concerning the registration and examination processes for patents, trademarks, copyrights, geographical indications, and industrial designs.

The agreement further addresses the protection, enforcement, and utilization of intellectual property rights, thereby supporting a comprehensive approach to IP management.

To operationalize the MoU, both sides will develop a biennial work plan outlining detailed activities and the scope of cooperation. This structured plan will guide the implementation of joint initiatives and ensure sustained engagement.

The communique emphasized that the MoU represents a significant step forward in fostering India-US cooperation in intellectual property. It will provide opportunities for both countries to learn from each other’s experiences and best practices.

Moreover, the agreement aligns with India’s broader objectives under the National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy of 2016. It is expected to contribute to India’s ambition to become a major player in global innovation by strengthening its IP ecosystem.
