Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL), the technology arm of Reliance Industries, has broken into the top 20 of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) latest Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings for 2025. The company’s leap of 320 places to the 20th spot marks it as the only Indian technology firm featured among the world’s leading patent applicants.
This significant rise places Jio Platforms alongside global technology giants such as Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple, and Microsoft, according to a company statement issued on June 14, 2026.
The ascent is particularly notable given that global PCT filings increased by less than 1% during the same period, highlighting Jio’s accelerating pace of innovation and intellectual property generation.
Jio Platforms’ patent portfolio focuses on cutting-edge technologies including 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access networks, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing, and digital services infrastructure.
Akash M. Ambani, Managing Director of Jio Platforms, stated, “The rise of Jio Platforms to the global top 20 in the WIPO PCT rankings reflects our years of efforts towards transforming into a deep-tech company.” He emphasized that this achievement demonstrates the company’s innovation capabilities across advanced technologies and aligns with India’s ambition to become a creator and exporter of technology.
The WIPO PCT ranking is widely regarded as a key indicator of research and development productivity and intellectual property strength. Jio noted that this recognition underscores the growing presence of India-origin innovation on the global technology stage.
As of March 31, 2026, Jio Platforms had filed a total of 6,817 patents worldwide, with 2,393 filed in India and 4,424 in overseas jurisdictions. The company has secured 1,009 patent grants globally, including 538 in India and 471 internationally.
Beyond current filings, Jio Platforms is actively developing emerging technologies such as 5G and 6G radio systems, 5G and 6G core networks, satellite communications, and its Agentic AI platform, JioBrain. The company anticipates these innovations will contribute substantially to future growth in its intellectual property portfolio.
This milestone represents a broader shift within India’s technology sector, moving from large-scale technology adoption towards original technology creation and innovation leadership.
The achievement also reflects Reliance Industries’ strategic vision to position Jio Platforms as a global deep-tech powerhouse, leveraging intellectual property as a core asset in the competitive technology landscape.
