KIPO Collaborates with SK Group to Enhance Patent Expertise in Strategic Technologies

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced on July 23 that it will co-host the "MOIP Tech Concert" with SK Group, marking a strategic collaboration to enhance patent examination capabilities in key technological fields.

At the event, researchers from SK hynix, SK Innovation, and SK On presented their latest advancements in high-bandwidth memory (HBM), next-generation thermal management solutions including immersion cooling, and next-generation battery technologies, respectively. These presentations were followed by in-depth discussions with KIPO patent examiners, fostering a mutual understanding of the technologies and associated patent issues.

These technology areas—HBM, advanced thermal management, and next-generation batteries—are identified as core components of the South Korean government's "Three Mega Projects for the Great Leap Forward of the Republic of Korea." KIPO emphasized its commitment to leveraging policy tools to nurture these future-oriented technologies and to secure robust global patent competitiveness supporting them.

In conjunction with the MOIP Tech Concert, an intellectual property policy roundtable was held featuring Jeong Yeon-woo, Deputy Commissioner of KIPO, and Jang Jeong-hwan, Vice President of the SK SUPEX Council. The roundtable focused on strategies to strengthen global patent competitiveness in advanced technological fields and discussed improvements to the intellectual property system in the context of the AI era.

KIPO indicated plans to continue the MOIP Tech Concert series, expanding its focus to other national strategic technology sectors such as future mobility, biotechnology and food technologies, and advanced materials.

Jang Jeong-hwan, Vice President of the SK SUPEX Council, highlighted the importance of rapid and robust patent protection, stating, "Since technological competitiveness leads directly to global competitiveness, protecting excellent technologies with fast and strong patents is more important than anything else. SK Group will also work closely with KIPO going forward to help strengthen the patent competitiveness of Korea's advanced industries."

Deputy Commissioner Jeong Yeon-woo reinforced KIPO's role, saying, "KIPO is responsible for connecting our companies' advanced technologies to strong patents that work in the global market. We will actively promote the MOIP Tech Concert so that it becomes a leading forum for communication where industry and patent examiners together understand future technologies and enhance the patent competitiveness of our core technologies."

This collaboration reflects a broader governmental and industrial effort to align intellectual property frameworks with rapid technological innovation, ensuring South Korea maintains a competitive edge in global markets.

The MOIP Tech Concert initiative exemplifies KIPO's proactive approach to integrating patent examination with evolving technology landscapes, particularly in sectors pivotal to the country's economic and technological advancement.

The event and ongoing partnership underscore the critical role of effective patent systems in supporting innovation ecosystems and securing intellectual property rights in rapidly developing fields.

KIPO and SK Group's joint efforts aim to create a sustainable model for continuous knowledge exchange between patent authorities and industry innovators, ultimately enhancing the quality and strategic value of patents granted.
