Korea's NAEK Hosts Forum to Shape National Intellectual Property Strategies Amid AI Advancement

The National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK) announced on September 16 its initiative to focus on intellectual property (IP) strategies critical to Korea’s ambition to become a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI). Under the theme "Our Intellectual Property Strategies and Challenges to Emerge as an AI Powerhouse," NAEK will host the Intellectual Property Strategy Forum on September 23 at the Chosun Palace Hotel in Gangnam, Seoul.

This forum is designed to convene experts from Korea’s industrial, legal, and governmental sectors to deliberate on policy and institutional challenges that arise as AI technologies rapidly permeate industrial applications. The goal is to forge coordinated national strategies that link AI technological competitiveness with securing intellectual property rights and enhancing industrial strength.

As AI integration accelerates, existing IP regimes face unprecedented challenges. These include complexities in acquiring patents related to AI innovations, navigating copyright issues tied to training data, and determining ownership rights over outcomes generated by AI systems. The forum aims to address these multifaceted issues from diverse perspectives encompassing industry, technology, law, and institutional frameworks.

Keynote presentations will be delivered by Sukjoo Cho, Director of the AX Convergence Research Lab at POSCO DX, and Sooyong Shin, Chief AI and Chief Product Officer (CAIO & CPO) of Kakao Healthcare. Their insights will set the stage for an in-depth panel discussion moderated by Yoonmo Sung, former Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The panel will feature prominent figures including Taewook Kang, Attorney at Bae, Kim & Lee LLC; Suyeon Kim, Partner at Deloitte Consulting; Kyungjin Choi, Professor of Law at Gachon University; and Ilgyu Kim, Director General of Intellectual Property Policy at the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Together, they will explore the intersection of AI innovation and intellectual property law, seeking actionable policy directions.

More than 100 participants are expected to attend, including government officials, CEOs, CTOs, Chief Intellectual Property Officers (CIPOs), and representatives from universities and government-funded research institutes. This diverse assembly underscores the forum’s comprehensive approach to addressing IP challenges in the AI era.

The forum reflects Korea’s proactive stance in anticipating and resolving the complex IP issues that accompany AI’s transformative impact on industry and society. By fostering collaboration across sectors, NAEK aims to position Korea at the forefront of AI innovation while safeguarding intellectual property rights vital to sustained economic growth and technological leadership.
