Microchip Technology Incorporated (MCHP) is experiencing robust momentum in its technology-licensing business, reflecting growing demand for its intellectual property across embedded and intelligent-edge applications. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, technology-licensing revenues rose to $42.6 million, up from $33 million in the same quarter the previous year. The segment reported an equivalent gross profit due to the absence of cost of sales. For fiscal 2026, licensee revenues increased to $163.8 million from $131.1 million in fiscal 2025, driven by licensing activity involving Microchip’s SuperFlash embedded flash technology and other IP assets.
Building on this positive trajectory, Microchip’s Silicon Storage Technology (SST) subsidiary announced a significant customer win with AnalogAI for its memBrain SAGE intellectual property. This technology integrates analog compute-in-memory with ultra-low-power operation, enabling real-time artificial intelligence (AI) inference and learning directly on edge devices. AnalogAI intends to incorporate memBrain SAGE in processors designed for applications including humanoid robots, drones, and vehicles.
The design win notably expands Microchip’s footprint in edge AI and neuromorphic computing markets. It also positions the company to strengthen its competitive edge against major semiconductor players Texas Instruments (TXN) and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), as AI workloads increasingly transition from centralized cloud infrastructures to physical edge devices.
This deal aligns with Microchip’s broader Total System Solution strategy, which integrates hardware, software, and services across a diverse portfolio encompassing microcontrollers, microprocessors, analog, FPGA, memory, and connectivity products. The company identifies AI/machine learning (AI/ML), edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) as key growth drivers supported by this comprehensive product suite.
Microchip’s PIC64HX and PIC64-HPSC processors already support AI/ML processing capabilities. Concurrent research and development efforts focus on mixed-signal microcontrollers, memory, analog products, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), Flash IP, and application-specific software libraries. This broad portfolio could enable the memBrain SAGE design win to catalyze additional opportunities for Microchip content in processing, connectivity, power management, and embedded control sectors.
In parallel, NXP Semiconductors is intensifying competition in the edge AI domain through its extensive range of AI-enabled processors and microcontrollers tailored for industrial, automotive, and IoT applications. NXP projects that AI-enabled processors will account for 15% of industrial and IoT processor revenues by 2026, more than doubling from 2025 levels. The company’s physical-AI design funnel has surpassed $1.5 billion across over 200 customers, underscoring strong market engagement in edge AI.
Texas Instruments is also reinforcing its market position via its Analog and Embedded Processing portfolios. The company reports robust demand in robotics, industrial automation, and energy infrastructure sectors, fueled by increasing semiconductor content in emerging systems. TI’s manufacturing capacity and competitive lead times provide a strategic advantage, enabling rapid responses to supply shortages and enhancing its ability to secure new design wins. These strengths may intensify competitive pressures on Microchip as edge AI adoption expands across industrial and embedded applications.
Microchip Technology’s shares have appreciated 9.2% year to date, compared with a 16.7% gain for the broader Zacks Computer and Technology sector. The stock currently trades at a forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio of 17.31, below the sector average of 20.32, and holds a Value Score of D.
