Musicondalla, a cultural music enterprise dedicated to Filipino rondalla music, is strengthening intellectual property (IP) protections to safeguard original compositions and arrangements. This initiative aims to ensure that composers and arrangers receive proper recognition and financial compensation for their contributions to the Philippines’ musical heritage.
Traditional Filipino music, including rondalla, has historically been passed down through generations without formal mechanisms to protect the rights of its creators. Musicondalla seeks to address this gap by establishing clearer processes for documenting musical works, managing licensing agreements, and enforcing attribution.
Mariefrance Vasquez Ballester, founder and CEO of Musicondalla, emphasized the importance of supporting creators, stating, “Preserving Filipino music also means protecting the people who create it. We cannot expect our musical traditions to thrive if composers, arrangers, and musicians cannot sustain themselves through their craft.”
A key component of Musicondalla’s strategy is its catalog of works by National Artist for Music Alfredo Santos Buenaventura, which the organization acquired in 2022. The enterprise is actively expanding its collection of original rondalla compositions and arrangements for use in live performances, educational settings, and digital distribution.
To facilitate access while protecting creators’ rights, Musicondalla has implemented a tiered licensing framework. Under this system, schools, youth ensembles, and noncommercial performers may use selected musical works without fees, provided they obtain proper permissions and give appropriate attribution.
Conversely, commercial users are required to secure formal licensing agreements and remit applicable fees. This approach aims to balance educational and cultural dissemination with the economic sustainability of Filipino composers and arrangers.
Musicondalla is also exploring the use of digital licensing platforms and online music repositories. These tools are intended to improve accessibility to Filipino musical scores both domestically and internationally, creating new distribution channels for traditional compositions.
The organization is actively pursuing partnerships with music publishers, educational institutions, cultural organizations, and industry stakeholders. These collaborations seek to expand international publishing opportunities and introduce Filipino classical and folk music to wider audiences.
Through these initiatives, Musicondalla aims not only to preserve Filipino musical traditions but also to ensure that the creators behind these works can continue to earn livelihoods from their craft. This dual focus on cultural preservation and economic sustainability represents a significant advancement in the protection of Philippine musical heritage.
