Singapore’s NUS Enterprise announced on September 24 the launch of Nova, an artificial intelligence platform engineered to dramatically accelerate the process of patent analysis and commercialisation. Developed in collaboration with AI infrastructure company Zima Labs, Nova can analyse patents, assess their licensing potential against real-world market data, and identify suitable licensees based on compatibility. This innovation aims to compress weeks of manual work into minutes, thereby facilitating faster translation of university research into market-ready solutions.
Tan Sian Wee, NUS Senior Vice-President for Innovation and Enterprise, highlighted the core challenge in commercialising university research: "The real challenge is translation – finding the right opportunities, validating them early, building strong teams and connecting founders with the capital, industry and markets they need to scale."
Industry estimates indicate that 70 to 80 percent of university-held patents globally remain unlicensed, primarily due to difficulties in identifying appropriate commercial partners and researchers’ limited insight into industry needs their work could address. Nova addresses this gap by not only analysing patents but also tailoring proposals for potential commercial partners and flagging any patent limitations.
The platform’s capabilities extend to recommending co-development and partnership strategies, as well as identifying potential investors and collaborators. Importantly, Nova’s recommendations are supported by underlying market evidence, enabling commercialisation managers to make informed decisions swiftly. "Every single step here is done automatically – we’ve just compressed a few man-weeks of work into minutes," said Tan.
In conjunction with Nova’s launch, NUS Enterprise has rebranded itself as NUSX, reflecting its evolution into an integrated venture-building and intellectual property commercialisation platform. As part of its global expansion strategy, NUSX has forged a partnership with UnternehmerTUM, a prominent start-up hub in Munich, Germany. This collaboration aims to connect Singapore’s deep tech ecosystem with Munich’s, fostering enhanced investment links, talent exchange, and start-up opportunities on a global scale.
NUSX plans to establish its second international outpost in Munich under this partnership. Meanwhile, TUM Venture Labs, a joint initiative between UnternehmerTUM and the Technical University of Munich, is exploring the establishment of a representative office in Singapore. This follows NUSX’s first outpost launched in Silicon Valley in June 2026, with a third outpost scheduled to open in Shanghai in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Additionally, a Munich-based venture capital firm affiliated with UnternehmerTUM is currently in discussions to join the NUS Venture Capital Programme as its fifth VC partner. Dr. Tan emphasized the strategic value of these developments: "Through reciprocal outposts, deeper investment links, and new opportunities for our students and start-ups, we are bringing talent, research and capital closer together."
These initiatives position NUSX at the forefront of accelerating the commercialisation of university intellectual property, leveraging AI technology and international collaboration to bridge the gap between research and market impact.
