NYSBA Announces 2025 Fall Intellectual Property Meeting with Focus on Brand Licensing, Advertising Law, and AI Ethics

The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) has announced its Intellectual Property 2025 Fall Meeting, inviting legal professionals to engage with current issues shaping the IP landscape. The event, which will be held in partnership with Akerman LLP, is set to provide attendees with strategic insights and practical guidance relevant to their intellectual property practices.

Participants will have the opportunity to earn 3.0 MCLE credits, including 1.0 credit dedicated to ethics. The program will conclude with a networking reception at 7:00 p.m., offering a platform for professionals to connect and discuss the day's topics in an informal setting.

This year’s agenda features a comprehensive panel discussion on the evolution of brand licensing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The session will examine the impact of influencers, cobranding, collaborations, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights, franchising, and the roles of platforms such as TikTok and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and social media. Panelists will explore why licensing remains a robust revenue generator for many brands in the current market.

Another session will delve into the intersection of branding and advertising law, focusing on real-world lessons and strategies for navigating regulatory scrutiny and false advertising challenges. Attendees will gain insights into how these issues can affect branding campaigns, with a particular emphasis on challenges related to sustainability, supplement, and performance claims for consumer products. In-house counsel will share their perspectives on risk management and mitigation strategies in this evolving area.

A dedicated panel will address the latest ethical practices for attorneys and clients utilizing artificial intelligence in the provision of legal services. This session aims to equip legal professionals with up-to-date guidance on maintaining ethical standards while leveraging AI technologies in their practices.

The NYSBA is also extending special membership offers to law students, who can join both the association and its IP Section at no cost. Upon joining, students will automatically receive discounted registration rates for the event. The association encourages new members to contact Sharmin Woodall to confirm membership and have their event registration fee waived.

For the same price as event registration, attendees can opt to join the NYSBA and the IP Section, granting them access to this event at no additional cost and discounted rates for future Section events. The association highlights this as an opportunity for ongoing professional development and networking within the intellectual property field.

The 2025 Fall Meeting underscores NYSBA’s commitment to providing timely education and networking opportunities for intellectual property practitioners, with a program designed to address the most pressing issues facing the industry today.
