Ohio State Libraries’ PTRC Empowers Innovators with Expert Intellectual Property Guidance

For inventors, researchers, and entrepreneurs, transforming an idea into protected intellectual property can be a complex and daunting process. The Ohio State University Libraries’ Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) plays a crucial role in guiding innovators through this journey by providing expert support, educational resources, and practical advice on patents, trademarks, and other forms of intellectual property protection.

As part of a nationwide network designated by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Ohio State’s PTRC connects inventors and business owners with authoritative information to safeguard their creations. This network spans academic, public, and state libraries across the country, but Ohio State’s program distinguishes itself through its multidisciplinary team, which includes a business librarian, an engineering librarian, a chemistry and physical sciences librarian, and a food, agricultural, and environmental sciences librarian.

Patricia Verdines, engineering librarian and assistant professor at Ohio State, emphasizes that the center’s success is measured not solely by patent filings but by empowering patrons to understand the types of intellectual property protections available. She recalls assisting an alumnus preparing to present an invention to potential investors. Concerned about protecting his idea before public disclosure, he sought guidance from the PTRC. Verdines and her colleagues helped him identify relevant resources, advised him on filing a provisional patent application, and recommended drafting a nondisclosure agreement to secure his invention during discussions.

"He was delighted to see that relevant resources are available for his particular situation at the USPTO," Verdines said.

While housed within University Libraries, the PTRC’s reach extends beyond campus boundaries. It serves Ohio State students, faculty, and researchers, as well as local inventors, small business owners, and members of the public throughout Ohio. Megan Powell, chemistry and physical sciences librarian and PTRC team member, highlights the university’s partnership with the Columbus Metropolitan Library, which broadens access to intellectual property education and resources statewide. This collaboration aligns with Ohio State’s land-grant mission by supporting innovation and entrepreneurship across the region.

The PTRC offers a variety of educational workshops, information sessions, and personalized consultations throughout the year. In the past two years alone, the center has educated over 745 individuals on protecting their intellectual property.

Powell notes that one of the PTRC’s most important roles is demystifying the intellectual property process. "We can prepare you in understanding how the application process works, give you the tools to conduct a prior art search, connect you with the right people, and prepare you to ask the right questions as you consider the IP protection you want to pursue," she explained. "The process is not easy, but working with the PTRC can help your understanding and make the process less intimidating."
