Procopio Strengthens Life Sciences Patent Practice with Addition of Partner Brent Johnson

Procopio, a leading intellectual property law firm, announced the addition of Brent Johnson as a partner in its Orange County office on April 2, 2024. Johnson joins Procopio’s expanding IP team, bringing deep expertise in patent prosecution and portfolio management, particularly within the life sciences and medical device sectors.

John D. Alessio, Managing Partner at Procopio, welcomed Johnson, highlighting his dual scientific and legal acumen. “Brent is a brilliant PhD chemist with a long history of success empowering life sciences companies with robust patent portfolios,” Alessio said. “He is a welcome addition to Procopio’s partnership and our growing intellectual property practice.”

Johnson’s career began as a research chemist before transitioning into intellectual property law. He earned a PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles, a Juris Doctor from Whittier Law School, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Brigham Young University.

Prior to joining Procopio, Johnson worked at Allergan, where he managed patent portfolios for pharmaceutical products generating approximately $1 billion in annual sales. Notable products under his portfolio management included Lumigan®, Alphagan®, Combigan®, and Restasis®. His legal experience encompasses patent prosecution, post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board, IP due diligence, and import/export IP issues.

Johnson has been recognized by Super Lawyers® and Patexia Insights for his legal expertise. He joins Procopio from Maschoff Brennan, further strengthening the firm’s life sciences patent prosecution capabilities.
