South Korea Sees Record Surge in Domestic Patent and Trademark Filings Driven by AI and Semiconductor Innovations

South Korea's domestic intellectual property landscape reached new heights in the first half of 2024, with patent and trademark applications hitting record levels. According to data released by the Ministry of Intellectual Property, patent applications totaled 141,259 while trademark filings reached 187,787, marking the highest figures ever recorded for the period. These represent year-on-year growth rates of 29.2% and 18.6%, respectively.

The surge is largely attributed to rapid developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor sectors. The "computer programming, system integration and management" category, which encompasses AI-related technologies, expanded its share of patent applications from 10.5% to 16.0% within a year, becoming the leading field for filings. Meanwhile, the semiconductor manufacturing industry maintained the second-largest share, with patent applications rising 13.8% year-over-year to 8,148, though its relative share slightly declined due to the faster growth in AI-related filings.

A striking feature of this growth is the dramatic increase in patent applications filed by individual inventors. Individual filings soared by 134% compared to the previous year, accounting for 23.9% of all patent applications and becoming the largest applicant category. This shift is closely linked to the adoption of generative AI tools, which have lowered the traditional barriers to patent filing. Historically, patent applications required the assistance of patent attorneys to prepare detailed specifications and drawings. However, individuals are now increasingly using AI to draft and submit applications independently.

The proportion of patents filed directly by individuals rose from 28.8% in 2023 to 66.7% in the first half of 2024. Additionally, the number of first-time patent applicants increased by 74.2%, further indicating a reduced threshold for entry into the patent system.

Other applicant categories also experienced growth: university and public research institution filings increased by 30%, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by 27.6%, and medium-sized companies by 16.4%. Large companies saw a more modest rise of 2.9%. Despite the rapid growth in individual filings, the overall patent ecosystem remains diverse.

Trademark applications similarly reached record levels, reflecting broader commercial activity and brand development alongside technological innovation.

South Korean innovators are also expanding their intellectual property footprint internationally. Patent applications filed by Korean nationals to major overseas jurisdictions increased significantly year-on-year: 10.4% to the United States, 14.9% to Europe, 14.8% to Japan, and 1.8% to China. This trend aligns with corporate strategies to secure patent rights ahead of market entry abroad, signaling growing global ambitions among Korean companies.

The Ministry of Intellectual Property's data underscores the transformative impact of AI on the patent landscape, not only by accelerating innovation in key industries but also by democratizing access to patent filing processes. This evolution is reshaping South Korea’s IP environment, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic innovation ecosystem that spans individuals, academia, SMEs, and large enterprises alike.

As South Korea continues to lead in AI and semiconductor technologies, the intellectual property system is adapting to support this growth, both domestically and on the international stage.
