Thailand DIP Reports Robust Growth in Patent and Design Filings for First Half of 2026

Thailand's Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has published comprehensive statistics on intellectual property filings for the first half of 2026, covering invention patents, petty patents, and design patents. The data reveals continued growth in filing activity alongside notable improvements in examination and registration outputs.

Invention patent applications rose by 4.47% to 4,299 filings compared to the same period last year. More strikingly, patent grants surged by 20.49%, indicating enhanced examination efficiency within the Thai patent system. Foreign applicants remain the predominant force in invention patents, accounting for 87% of all filings, underscoring Thailand's significance as a jurisdiction for international patent protection.

Japanese companies maintain a strong presence among top filers, occupying three of the top five applicant positions. Leading applicants include Toyota, representing automotive technologies, and Qualcomm, focusing on communications technology. The filings span diverse sectors such as automotive, communications, steel manufacturing, and agricultural technologies.

Pharmaceuticals and healthcare-related innovations lead invention patent filings with 562 applications, reflecting sustained research and development in medicines, medical treatments, and health technologies. Communications technology follows with 380 applications. Advanced life sciences and biotechnology are also prominent, with antibody and biopharmaceutical innovations ranking third (195 applications) and enzyme-related biotechnology fifth (102 applications). Additionally, macromolecular industry technologies, including polymers and advanced materials, rank fourth with 126 applications.

Petty patent filings exhibited robust growth, increasing by 13.10%, while registrations soared by 45.41%. This trend suggests expanding grassroots and incremental innovation alongside more efficient processing. Unlike invention patents, petty patents are overwhelmingly domestically driven, with Thai applicants accounting for 94% of filings. Thai universities dominate the top applicant positions, highlighting their pivotal role in local innovation.

The food and beverage sector is the largest contributor to petty patent filings, with 282 applications, reflecting Thailand's strong agricultural and food-processing industries. Other significant sectors include herbal medicine (137 applications), medical devices (88 applications), and enzyme-related biotechnology (52 applications), indicating active commercial and research interests in traditional medicine, healthcare, and biotech. Communications technology also features prominently with 133 applications, demonstrating ongoing innovation in electronics and telecommunications.

Design patent applications increased by 5.79%, while registrations rose by 45.03%, signaling sustained growth in industrial design protection. This growth complements the broader innovation trends observed across patents and petty patents.
