Thailand Launches 'AMAZING Thailand GI Tour & Trail Running' to Promote Geographical Indication Products and Local Tourism

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), led by Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, has officially launched the "AMAZING Thailand GI Tour & Trail Running" series, an innovative program designed to combine sports, health, and local cultural identity to enrich travel experiences across the country. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving TAT, the Department of Internal Trade, and the Department of Intellectual Property, focusing on the promotion of Geographical Indication (GI) products as unique features that distinguish each travel destination.

The program encourages participants to engage directly with local communities, thereby supporting regional economies and fostering an appreciation for authentic Thai heritage through trail running activities. This approach aligns with evolving tourism trends where travelers increasingly seek health-oriented, community-based experiences that contribute to grassroots economic growth.

The series commenced with the "Lanna Trail" event in Chiang Mai, highlighting the renowned "Thep Sedet Coffee," a GI-certified Arabica coffee celebrated for its distinctive wild flower aroma. Runners participating in the trail were offered a "GI Coffee Experience," which included demonstrations of coffee roasting and brewing conducted by local experts, providing an immersive cultural encounter.

To broaden accessibility, TAT has also introduced a national "Virtual Run" program. Registration for this virtual event is open from April 2 to May 15, during which participants are invited to complete a total running distance of 77 kilometres. Progress can be tracked online at https://race.thai.run/gitourandtrail. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Finisher shirt and medal and become eligible for additional incentives such as 100 GI product gift sets and accommodation vouchers designed to encourage future travel within Thailand.

This initiative represents a new paradigm in meaningful tourism, where physical fitness activities are leveraged to promote equitable income distribution to local communities while enhancing appreciation for Thailand's diverse geographic and cultural assets.

In related developments, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin commended the recognition of national parks' management and emphasized the importance of maintaining strict standards. He urged the replication of such practices across other national parks to sustain long-term tourism growth.

Additionally, representatives from the Association of Thai Silk & Culture Promotions, alongside diplomats and honorary consuls from over 13 countries, convened with Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Supamas Isarabhakdi on May 6 to discuss details of an upcoming cultural festival.

The National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards (ACFS) has been tasked with collaborating with local authorities in Chanthaburi to prevent the distribution of "storm-fallen durians" in both domestic and international markets, ensuring quality and safety standards.

Public engagement was also evident in the naming of a calf, with the name "Nong Moo Daeng" receiving the highest votes among five shortlisted options, reflecting growing interest in wildlife conservation managed by the national zoo network.

On the regional front, ASEAN leaders have reiterated commitments to enhance intra-regional trade, aiming to increase it to at least 30% by 2030 as part of broader economic integration efforts. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan highlighted these goals during the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu on May 8.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the collective agreement among ASEAN member states on the necessity of stable and reliable energy supply chains and stronger cooperation on energy security.

Malaysian Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani noted proposals to involve the private sector in an ASEAN oil stockpiling framework, discussed during the ASEAN meeting in Cebu on May 7.

Trade data from the UN Commodity Trade Statistics Database indicates that the Philippines has recorded the largest trade deficit among ASEAN economies from 2015 to 2024.

In regulatory news, the Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry issued new guidelines to car importers that effectively raise the minimum retail price and power output requirements for fully imported electric vehicles, signaling a shift in market policy.

Separately, Amazon.sg has adjusted its strategy since its 2019 launch, which initially focused on providing Singapore customers with localized storefronts, currency options, and Prime benefits.

ASEAN leaders have pledged to maintain the flow of essential goods within the region, ensuring open and predictable markets, while enhancing mechanisms for regional food security.
