Trinity College Dublin Appoints Dr. Richard Bunworth as Assistant Professor of Intellectual Property Law

Trinity College Dublin’s School of Law has announced the appointment of Dr. Richard Bunworth as Assistant Professor in Intellectual Property Law. Dr. Bunworth will be responsible for lecturing in Intellectual Property Law, Industrial Property, and related subjects. Additionally, he will supervise dissertations covering intellectual property, technology, and competition law.

Dr. Bunworth holds degrees from Trinity College Dublin, the University of Oxford, and King’s College London. He completed his PhD at University College Dublin, supported by the Irish Research Council as a Postgraduate Scholar and as a Sutherland Doctoral Scholar.

His academic research primarily explores European Union law, with a particular focus on competition law within the EU framework. Dr. Bunworth’s work also addresses digital markets and emerging technologies, investigating how intellectual property and competition law should adapt to new challenges in these areas.

His scholarship has been published in prestigious international journals, including the European Competition Law Review, the IIC - International Review of Intellectual Property and Competition Law, and the International Sports Law Journal.

Before returning to academia, Dr. Bunworth practised as a solicitor at one of Ireland’s largest law firms, specialising in debt finance. In 2024, he was appointed as a Non-Governmental Advisor to the Irish Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, where he leads the Commission’s contributions to the International Competition Network Mergers Working Group.

Dr. Bunworth’s appointment strengthens Trinity’s expertise in intellectual property and competition law, particularly in the context of evolving digital markets and regulatory challenges. His combined practical and academic experience positions him to contribute significantly to both teaching and research at the School of Law.
