U.S. Concludes Three-Day Lagos Workshop to Strengthen IP Protection for Emerging Nigerian Musicians

The United States recently wrapped up a three-day workshop in Lagos State aimed at helping emerging Nigerian musicians protect their intellectual property and expand their audience both within Nigeria and internationally. The event, titled ‘Intellectual Property (IP) for Growth in Africa: Music Industry Workshop,’ was designed to leverage intellectual property as a catalyst for investment, partnerships, and shared economic growth in the music industry.

The workshop gathered a diverse group of participants, including music industry leaders, emerging professionals, legal experts, and policy stakeholders. Their discussions centered on how effective IP systems can strengthen creative businesses, safeguard artistic assets, attract investment, and broaden commercial opportunities.

Brandon Hudspeth, speaking shortly after his appointment as the new U.S. Consul General to Nigeria, highlighted the importance of collaboration between American expertise and Nigerian creative talent. He stated, “As Nigerian music reaches more listeners across the country, continent, and globe, enterprise coupled with American companies, Nigerian artists, labels, and platforms creates a strong economic engine.”

Hudspeth underscored the critical role of intellectual property in this ecosystem, noting that the U.S. could contribute to long-term projects and market development that empower Nigerian creators to maintain control over their networks and IP rights. He remarked, “The creative sector doesn’t only inspire; it generates economic opportunities in film, music, design, and publishing.”

The workshop’s closing session featured a panel discussion with key stakeholders from the music industry. The panel provided guidance on how emerging music and creative professionals can help propel Nigeria’s music industry toward the $1 billion milestone. Discussions included the necessary partnerships, policies, and support structures to sustain growth and promote shared prosperity.

Mr. Hudspeth convened the workshop in partnership with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and Nigerian alumni of the American Music Mentorship Program. This collaboration underscored a shared commitment to intellectual property education and industry development.

The event reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen intellectual property frameworks in Nigeria’s creative sectors, aiming to foster innovation, attract investment, and enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian artists and businesses.

By equipping emerging musicians with IP knowledge and connecting them with international expertise, the workshop sought to create a sustainable foundation for Nigeria’s music industry growth and economic prosperity.
