U.S.-Nigeria Workshop Highlights Intellectual Property’s Role in Boosting Music Industry Collaboration

The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos recently convened a landmark three-day workshop titled “IP for Growth in Africa: Lagos Music Industry Workshop,” bringing together more than 120 participants from across the intellectual property and creative sectors. Attendees included IP policymakers, lawyers, music executives, artists, producers, distributors, and other stakeholders invested in the Nigerian music industry’s growth.

This event was part of the U.S. Mission’s commemoration of 250 years of American independence and aimed to showcase U.S. expertise in building a globally influential music industry. It also provided a platform to learn from Nigeria’s burgeoning creative talent and innovation.

Organized in partnership with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the U.S. Mission in Geneva, and Nigerian alumni of the American Music Mentorship Program (AMMP), the workshop leveraged the experience of 10 Nigerian AMMP alumni. These alumni brought valuable insights from their exposure to both U.S. and Nigerian music markets, enriching discussions on industry best practices.

Panelists highlighted successful U.S.-Nigeria commercial collaborations, such as Universal Music Group’s partnership with Mavin Records and EMPIRE’s alliance with YBNL. These partnerships have propelled Nigerian Afrobeats onto the global stage, expanding market access and generating new revenue streams benefiting stakeholders in both countries.

Key speakers included Obi Asika, Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture; Dr. John Asein, Director General of the Nigeria Copyright Commission; Dr. Tobi Moody, Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization Nigeria Country Office; and Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment. Representatives from leading American music companies operating in Nigeria also contributed.

The discussions covered critical topics such as copyright ownership, royalty systems, intellectual property enforcement, licensing, contracts, music monetization, streaming, publishing, and strategies for accessing international markets. These conversations aimed to establish the legal and commercial foundations necessary for a sustainable music industry.

In his closing remarks, U.S. Consul General Brandon Hudspeth emphasized the growing commercial partnership between the American and Nigerian music industries. He noted that major U.S. record labels—including Universal Music Group, EMPIRE, Sony, and Warner Music Group—alongside digital platforms like YouTube, Meta, and Apple Music, have played pivotal roles in helping Nigerian artists reach global audiences, generate revenue, attract investment, and create jobs throughout the creative value chain.

"The United States sees Nigeria’s music industry not only as a powerful cultural force but as a significant trade and investment opportunity," Consul General Hudspeth stated. He underscored that as Afrobeats continues to captivate global listeners, more American music companies will collaborate with Nigerian artists, labels, publishers, platforms, and creative enterprises.

Consul General Hudspeth further highlighted that strong intellectual property protection and enforcement are essential to providing the certainty U.S. companies require to enter partnerships, finance projects, develop new markets, and invest long term. "For Nigeria, strong IP protection gives U.S. investors greater confidence, gives creators greater control over their work, and creates the conditions for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic to invest, partner, and grow," he added.

The U.S. government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting bilateral and multilateral initiatives like this workshop, which bring together innovators, creators, policymakers, and industry leaders to build a sustainable music business ecosystem anchored in robust IP protections.
