The United Arab Emirates and South Korea have formalized a three-year joint action plan to deepen collaboration on patent and industrial design examination, as well as to explore the use of artificial intelligence in intellectual property (IP) protection. This development was announced during bilateral meetings held on the sidelines of the 68th series of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) member state sessions in Geneva, which took place from July 7 to 15.
Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, met with Kim Young-Sun, South Korea's Minister of Intellectual Property, to discuss the new cooperation framework. The plan focuses on exchanging expertise and information regarding patent and industrial design examination standards, guidelines, and best practices. The goal is to enhance the quality and efficiency of examination procedures in both countries.
Integral to the agreement are training programs and workshops designed for intellectual property officials, examiners, and relevant stakeholders. These initiatives aim to bolster technical expertise and promote professional standards across patents, trademarks, and industrial designs.
The UAE and South Korea will also investigate opportunities to leverage artificial intelligence technologies to protect and enforce intellectual property rights. This includes combating counterfeiting and trademark infringement, as well as raising public awareness about the importance of IP protection.
In a separate engagement, Minister Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri met with Edwin Tong, Singapore’s Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs. Their discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in developing intellectual property policies and legislation. Both sides emphasized supporting innovation, improving the efficiency of IP protection systems, and exchanging expertise and best practices.
The UAE delegation highlighted recent legislative advancements, including the introduction of laws governing industrial property rights, trademarks, copyrights, and neighbouring rights. These measures establish an integrated legal framework designed to safeguard intellectual property while fostering growth in start-ups and the cultural and creative sectors.
This trilateral engagement underscores the UAE’s commitment to strengthening its intellectual property ecosystem through international cooperation and innovation-driven strategies. The agreements with South Korea and Singapore are expected to contribute significantly to the advancement of IP protection frameworks and enforcement mechanisms in the region.
The timing of these developments coincides with the ongoing 68th WIPO meetings, providing a strategic platform for member states to align on global IP priorities and collaborative initiatives.
