The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) maintains a detailed and regularly updated guide covering all trademark forms and fees applicable to applicants and third parties engaging with the UK trademark system. This resource provides essential information on both online and paper-based transactions, including the latest fee schedules and form revisions.
As of 23 July 2026, the IPO introduced a new form enabling third parties to make observations before a trademark is registered. This form has been added to Section 9, which addresses opposition and defense procedures related to trademarks.
Significant layout changes were implemented on 28 June 2023 to improve user navigation. The page now features additional headings and descriptive summaries for each form category, enhancing clarity for users seeking specific trademark services.
On 26 April 2023, the IPO added a new end page to the guide containing a comprehensive checklist and detailed sending instructions. This update also included supplementary explanatory text for questions that previously required further clarification, assisting applicants in completing forms accurately.
Reflecting the impact of Brexit, the IPO amended Form TM3 on 1 October 2021 by removing the special arrangements that allowed customers to file a UK trademark right while claiming the earlier filing date of a pending European Union application. This option ceased on 30 September 2021 and is no longer available.
In August 2021, a broad update was applied to numerous trademark forms, including TM3, TM5, TM7, TM7F, TM7G, TM9, TM9R, TM12, TM13, TM16, TM16P, TM24, TM24C, TM26(I), TM26(N), TM26(O), TM31C, TM31M, TM31R, TM35, TM36, TM50, TM51, and TM55P. These updates aimed to ensure consistency and compliance with evolving trademark regulations.
The IPO also noted that from 1 April 2021, the temporary period during which zero fees were payable for certain forms (TM9, TM9R, TM11, and TM13) ended. Normal fee payments resumed for these forms from that date.
Applicants are reminded that all fee-bearing forms must be submitted with the appropriate payment. The IPO provides detailed guidance on acceptable payment methods, including card payments, cheques, bank transfers, and deposit accounts.
This comprehensive guide serves as an essential reference for trademark applicants, attorneys, and third parties engaging with the UK trademark system, ensuring awareness of procedural requirements, fee obligations, and recent regulatory changes.
For further details and access to the updated forms and fee schedules, users are encouraged to consult the IPO’s official publication.
