UKIPO Introduces Updated Form for Confirming Convention Country Priority Claims in Registered Design Applications

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) has implemented updates to the form used by applicants to confirm convention country priority claims related to UK registered design applications. This update was officially introduced on 26 April 2023 and is intended to improve the clarity and usability of the confirmation process.

A significant addition to the form is a new end page that contains a checklist and detailed sending instructions. This checklist serves as a practical guide for applicants to ensure that all necessary information and documentation are correctly provided before submission.

In addition to the checklist, the UKIPO has enhanced the supporting text accompanying certain questions within the form. These clarifications address areas that previously required further explanation, thereby reducing potential confusion and errors during the completion of the form.

The confirmation of convention country priority claims is a critical procedural step for applicants seeking registered design protection in the UK. It establishes the priority date based on an earlier application filed in a convention country, which can be essential for securing design rights.

Applicants are encouraged to utilize the updated form to benefit from the improved guidance and to facilitate a smoother examination process.

The UKIPO continues to seek feedback from users to further refine its services. Visitors to the GOV.UK website are invited to participate in a survey to share their experience and suggest improvements.

The updated form and related guidance are accessible through the UK government’s official website, ensuring that applicants have direct access to the latest procedural tools.

These enhancements reflect the UKIPO’s commitment to supporting intellectual property applicants by providing clear, user-friendly resources that promote compliance and efficiency in the design registration process.
