USPTO to Upgrade Assignment Search and Relocate Patent Export Data to Open Data Portal in July 2026

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued an update regarding its Assignment Center services, effective July 24, 2026. The Assignment Search tool will undergo enhancements aimed at delivering updated and more current assignment information to users. This improvement is intended to facilitate better access to assignment data for patent professionals, researchers, and the public.

In addition to the Assignment Search upgrade, the USPTO will relocate the Patent Export Assignment Data Search feature from the Assignment Center to the Open Data Portal. After the transition date, users who attempt to access Patent Export Data via the Assignment Center will be automatically redirected to the Open Data Portal’s patent assignment search page.

The Open Data Portal offers bulk data search capabilities, including access to the Patent File Wrapper bulk datasets. Users can perform detailed assignment searches using API queries, enabling more efficient and flexible data retrieval.

This move aligns with the USPTO’s broader initiative to centralize bulk data access and improve the availability of patent assignment information through modernized platforms. By consolidating bulk data services within the Open Data Portal, the USPTO aims to streamline user experience and enhance data accessibility.

Users are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Open Data Portal’s interface and API query options ahead of the July 24, 2026, transition to ensure uninterrupted access to patent assignment bulk data.

The USPTO emphasizes that the Assignment Search enhancement will continue to provide up-to-date assignment information, supporting transparency and accuracy in patent ownership records.

These changes reflect the USPTO’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve public access to patent data and support innovation and intellectual property management.

For further information and updates, users should monitor the USPTO’s official communications and website.
