Veteran IP Litigator Jon Swenson Joins Cadwell Thomas LLP in Houston

Jon Swenson, a highly experienced attorney with more than 20 years of practice representing technology companies in complex intellectual property and commercial disputes, has joined Cadwell Thomas LLP, a business litigation firm based in Houston.

Swenson’s career has encompassed the full spectrum of litigation, from pre-suit investigations through trial. He is recognized for crafting practical, business-focused legal strategies that align with clients’ broader objectives. His portfolio includes work on technically sophisticated matters and cases involving multiple jurisdictions. Notably, Swenson has represented leading communications technology companies in over 50 patent disputes, with billions of dollars at stake.

Firm founder Kevin Cadwell commented on the appointment, stating, “I practiced with Jon for many years and am thrilled that he has made this move. Jon was instrumental in helping build and develop our office when we worked together in the Silicon Valley, and he will be a crucial part of what we offer our clients now. Jon’s expertise—particularly in high-tech litigation—will further strengthen our capabilities, and his insights and counsel will be highly valuable for our clients.”

Beyond litigation, Swenson also advises clients on transactions, acquisitions, intellectual property strategy, and risk management. He has significant experience representing clients in post-grant proceedings and reviews before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Swenson has achieved a 100% success rate for both patent owners and challengers in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Swenson expressed enthusiasm about joining the firm, stating, “I've worked with Kevin on dozens of cases; he is a fantastic trial lawyer and provides exceptional client service. I'm excited to continue to work with him and other members of the firm to provide superior service and results. My clients will certainly benefit from their experience and expertise.”

Prior to joining Cadwell Thomas, Swenson was a partner in the Palo Alto office of Baker Botts for over a decade. He later moved to Bend, Oregon, where he represented select technology clients as a solo practitioner. Swenson is licensed in multiple state and federal jurisdictions. He earned his law degree with high honors from Santa Clara University School of Law and holds an undergraduate degree from California State University, Sacramento.

Cadwell Thomas LLP serves a broad range of business sectors, handling complex commercial disputes, intellectual property matters, and corporate transactions. The firm’s attorneys, many with backgrounds at major international law firms, represent both promising startups and Fortune 100 companies.

The addition of Jon Swenson is expected to further enhance the firm’s capabilities in high-stakes intellectual property litigation and strategic counseling for technology-driven clients.
