Veteran Producer Russ Hodge Launches 'Intellectual Property' Talk Show and Podcast Series in Maryland

Russ Hodge, an executive producer with a distinguished television career, is spearheading the launch of 'Intellectual Property,' a new hybrid talk show and podcast series set to premiere this season at the Weinberg Center for the Arts and the Maryland Theatre in Frederick, Maryland. The program is produced by 3 Roads Communications and will air on Maryland Public Television, with plans for national public television distribution and podcast release.

Hodge’s extensive résumé includes producing the political commentary show 'The McLaughlin Group,' working on 'Politically Incorrect,' consulting on the launch of Fox News, and executive producing content for CNBC. The concept for 'Intellectual Property' originated from a documentary series he developed with Dr. James Martin, a computing pioneer and Oxford University benefactor, based on Martin’s book, 'The Meaning of the 21st Century.' Although that documentary was never completed, Hodge’s global interviews with figures such as Human Genome Project scientist Craig Venter inspired the new format.

Reflecting on his interview experiences, Hodge noted, "People would say, 'That was a great interview. Those were great questions. That's the best interview I've ever done.'" This feedback, combined with his frustration over television formats that focus on diagnosing problems without offering solutions, shaped the series’ mission. "We were not just going to say here's what the problems are," Hodge explained. "We're going to offer solutions ... you as a viewer are left completely powerless and completely frustrated."

'Intellectual Property' is designed as a platform for thought leaders who provide actionable insights. Hodge emphasized the urgency of the project, stating, "Things have only gotten worse," which motivated him to bring the show to fruition now.

Critiquing current cable news formats, Hodge described panel shows with talking heads as "cheap to produce," relying on minimal payment and repetitive talking points. He contrasted this with the style of Jack Paar, a pioneering host of 'The Tonight Show,' who, according to Hodge’s parents, "always made the guest look good." This ethos informs the show’s approach: unfiltered conversations with minimal production distractions.

The show's staging is intentionally simple, featuring just two chairs, a coffee table, and a rug on an industrial-style stage. "We're not looking to jazz it up," Hodge said, underscoring the focus on conversation as the star.

A distinctive feature of 'Intellectual Property' is its interactive studio audience. Approximately 30 minutes into each episode, the floor is opened for audience questions. Hodge remarked, "In my many years of producing TV shows, I always found that when we had an audience asking questions, they asked better questions than anybody else generally."

This approach aligns with Hodge’s vision of "genuine reality television," emphasizing authentic thoughts and emotions rather than manufactured drama. He recounted a friend's experience on a 'Survivor' spinoff, contrasting it with the honest discourse he aims to foster.

The first announced guest is journalist Chuck Todd, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on September 19 at the Weinberg Center. Hodge has known Todd for nearly 30 years and highlighted his expertise ahead of the midterm elections: "There's nobody who's going to know this stuff better than he is."

Other early guests include Morris Pearl, former managing director at BlackRock and member of the Patriotic Millionaires, who advocates for higher taxes on the wealthy—a topic expected to provoke debate. Hodge welcomes such discourse, stating, "We're approaching this with a deep and profound respect for the audience and their willingness to be engaged, even if they may not agree with what the guest is saying."

Financial author and advocate Ric Edelman will also appear, addressing issues such as cryptocurrency education for financial advisers and strategies for funding higher education without compromising retirement plans. Edelman’s event is set for October 1 at the Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown, while Pearl will appear at the Frederick theater on October 14.

Hodge candidly acknowledged his own decreasing attention span over the past decade but expressed confidence in the public’s appetite for substantive conversation. "I think the public is brighter and more engaged and more interested than they have been given credit for," he said.

In addition to the live shows, Hodge has launched a companion 'Intellectual Property' channel featuring highlights from approximately 1,000 interviews conducted throughout his career, with guests ranging from astronaut Buzz Aldrin to Senator John McCain. New content is released several times weekly.

Regarding the series’ longevity, Hodge was unequivocal: "I think there's a great need for it, and as long as we can make it financially viable on a long-term basis, I certainly do."

The 'Intellectual Property' series represents a fresh approach to public discourse, combining in-depth interviews, audience interaction, and a commitment to solution-oriented dialogue, aiming to elevate the quality of televised and streamed conversations in the public interest.
