Warner Music Group (WMG) announced on June 10, 2026, the acquisition of Sureel AI, a company specializing in intellectual property protection and attribution technology tailored for the AI era. This strategic move aims to strengthen WMG’s capacity to safeguard and monetize the rights of artists, songwriters, and rightsholders as artificial intelligence increasingly intersects with creative content.
Sureel AI’s technology is built around a multi-patented system that generates an "AI DNA" fingerprint for each musical work. This process involves breaking down compositions into component parts and tracking how AI models utilize these elements. Such detailed tracing facilitates intellectual property provenance, audit and compliance reporting, and model optimization.
Beyond music, Sureel offers a growing suite focused on name, image, and likeness (NIL) attribution. This technology monitors the use of artist voices, likenesses, and performance identities in AI training and generation, including voice cloning, AI-generated avatars, and style replication. Currently, the Sureel registry holds millions of music assets and is architected to scale attribution capabilities into video and image content.
Despite the acquisition, Sureel will continue to operate as an independent platform serving the broader music and AI ecosystem. WMG’s resources and strategic support are expected to accelerate Sureel’s growth and technological development.
In a statement, a WMG representative emphasized the dual opportunity and responsibility AI presents: "AI powers a large fan engagement and value creation opportunity for our industry, while making the human provenance of music more important than ever. Bringing Sureel into WMG strengthens our capability for protection, control and monetization and ensures that the creative community remains in control of its intellectual property, name, image, likeness, and voice. We look forward to working with Tamay and his team to advance all of their incredible work."
Tamay Besiroglu, CEO of Sureel AI, added, "Rightsholders deserve to know how AI interacts with their work, and to share fairly in the value it creates. Sureel was built to make that possible, and with WMG's backing, we can deliver on our mission at scale, building a more transparent and fair future and driving value growth for the whole music and entertainment ecosystem."
Warner Music Group is a global entertainment company encompassing a wide range of labels including Atlantic, Elektra, Warner Records, and more. Its music publishing arm, Warner Chappell Music, manages over one million copyrights across genres. WMG also supports independent artists through ADA and offers artist services via WMX.
The acquisition of Sureel AI aligns with WMG’s broader strategy to leverage technology in protecting creative rights and adapting to the evolving digital landscape, particularly as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent.
