WIPR Rankings has released the 2025 edition of its WIPR Leaders directory, a comprehensive resource identifying the world’s leading intellectual property (IP) practitioners. Now in its tenth year, the directory has undergone a significant transformation, adopting a more selective and rigorous approach to identifying top-tier IP legal professionals globally.
The 2025 edition introduces an overhauled research and curation methodology designed to prioritize quality over quantity. This enhanced process incorporates extensive surveys, firm submissions, referee feedback, and in-depth interviews to ensure that only practitioners with verifiable and proven track records are included.
As a result, the directory presents a carefully vetted cohort of over 1,000 IP experts from 80 countries, reflecting a broad geographic representation. The United States leads with 329 listed leaders, followed by China with 93, Canada with 62, India with 51, Brazil with 44, Australia with 42, and both Israel and Germany with 33 practitioners each.
Baron Armah-Kwantreng, editor of the rankings, emphasized the directory’s global reach: "This level of global coverage makes the WIPR Leaders directory a vital resource for locating trusted IP counsel, whether within major economic centres or niche jurisdictions."
He further noted that the geographic diversity underscores WIPR’s commitment to inclusive representation, highlighting both established and emerging IP hubs worldwide.
A key change in the 2025 edition is that nomination is no longer guaranteed by submission alone. Each lawyer listed has undergone peer endorsement, substantiation through client work, and selection based on evidence of a proven track record.
This contrasts with previous editions by introducing a more stringent research process that includes comprehensive surveying, peer submissions, independent referee feedback, and detailed interviews.
The directory’s curated roster celebrates legal professionals not merely for their firm affiliations but for demonstrated excellence, adaptability, and thought leadership within the IP field.
WIPR’s refined focus ensures that only standout lawyers are nominated and selected, relying heavily on peer and client feedback, regional reputation, and measurable impact on the IP landscape.
The 2025 directory details each professional’s specialisms across key IP areas including copyright, design, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. It also specifies whether their expertise lies in contentious or non-contentious matters.
Profiles encompass individuals from multinational law firms, specialist boutiques, and leading in-house counsel at major global brands, providing a comprehensive view of the IP legal market’s top talent.
This new approach positions WIPR Leaders 2025 as an essential tool for clients and peers seeking trusted, high-caliber IP counsel worldwide, reflecting a maturing and increasingly discerning IP legal community.
