The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) has announced the establishment of the ENERGISE Centre, a new initiative aimed at facilitating a Just Energy Transition through advancements in renewable energy, governance, and innovative sustainable entrepreneurship. This centre is positioned to drive research and practical solutions that align with global sustainability goals.

In a significant academic recognition, Wits University posthumously conferred an honorary doctorate on the late Joseph Mokoena, a pioneering mathematician. This honor acknowledges his substantial contributions to mathematics, education, and the promotion of greater equality in knowledge production.

Wits University continues to foster a broad spectrum of academic and cultural activities. Upcoming events include the inaugural lecture by Professor Malebakeng Forere scheduled for July 21 in the Senate Room at 17:00, and 'Meteorite Nite - SA's Meteorite Heritage: Nqweba Meteorite,' presented by Professor Roger Gibson on July 22 at 06:00 in the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome.

The university recently celebrated its graduation ceremonies by honoring three outstanding leaders for their achievements and contributions. Concurrently, the Dean of Student Affairs highlighted concerns over increasing student gambling debt, calling for enhanced support mechanisms to address this issue.

Research at Wits is making strides in healthcare innovation, with new studies exploring plant-based methods to make colorectal cancer treatment safer and more affordable. In the arts, Wits Music has welcomed new leadership that embraces an African-centred vision, aiming to enrich the cultural and educational landscape.

Mental health research at Wits has revealed that peer mentors significantly improve the effectiveness of mental health applications in supporting young people, underscoring the importance of community involvement in digital health solutions.
