Xperix Accelerates Growth Through Intellectual Discovery Amid Rising Global Semiconductor Patent Conflicts

Xperix (KOSDAQ: 317770) is poised for substantial growth driven by the expanding intellectual property (IP) business of its subsidiary, Intellectual Discovery (ID). The company’s strategic move to consolidate ID amid a surge in global semiconductor patent disputes has raised expectations for increased corporate value.

On July 31, independent research firm ValueFinder published an analysis highlighting Intellectual Discovery as a pivotal growth engine for Xperix. The report emphasized that ID achieved its highest-ever performance through its patent monetization business and that the planned consolidation via increased equity—facilitated by convertible bond issuance—will positively impact future earnings.

Founded in 2017 as a spin-off from Suprema, Xperix specializes in digital identity verification solutions and has been publicly traded on KOSDAQ since 2019. As of Q1 2024, biometric solutions accounted for 55.0% of its revenue, while electronic document solutions contributed 9.8%. The company provides fingerprint recognition and electronic passport technologies to domestic public institutions and over 133 countries, including France, Singapore, and South Africa.

Xperix’s standalone financials for 2023 showed sales of 19.9 billion Korean won, marking a 37.5% increase from the previous year. Notably, quarterly operating income turned positive starting in Q4 2023, signaling a return to profitability in its core business.

Intellectual Discovery, in which Xperix holds a 28.11% stake, is recognized as South Korea’s first patent management specialist firm (non-practicing entity) established in 2010. It benefits from investments by public agencies and major Korean conglomerates such as Samsung, SK, and LG. ID’s business encompasses patent licensing, transactions, and patent finance, focusing on monetizing intellectual property assets.

In 2023, Intellectual Discovery reported record sales of 47.8 billion won and operating income of 11.3 billion won. The first quarter of 2024 alone saw sales of 23.8 billion won and operating income of 15.5 billion won, already surpassing the previous year’s full-year operating income.

ID’s investment portfolio has also demonstrated strong returns. Since 2019, it has invested four times in FuriosaAI, which was valued at over 3 trillion won during its Series D funding round in 2024, boosting the value of ID’s holdings. Additionally, the sale of VVC video codec standard patents generated approximately 15 billion won in revenue last year, underscoring ID’s competitive position in patent monetization.

To reinforce its growth trajectory, Xperix has initiated efforts to increase its stake in Intellectual Discovery. In May 2024, Xperix issued its seventh convertible bond worth 10 billion won, adding to the 15.5 billion won raised from the sixth convertible bond. The company plans to invest a total of 25.5 billion won to acquire additional shares and consolidate ID as a subsidiary.

Intellectual Discovery has also made significant strides in global patent litigation. In 2021, it secured a damages award of approximately 18.1 billion won in a USB patent infringement case against Kingston Technology in the United States. Since then, ID has expanded its patent licensing activities to include mobile communications, standard-essential patents, and major global technology companies.

Over the past six years, Intellectual Discovery’s cumulative IP monetization has exceeded 100 million U.S. dollars, with roughly 80% derived from patent litigation and licensing. Currently, the company is pursuing lawsuits related to voice recognition and GPU ray tracing patents against multinational corporations. As global semiconductor and related patent disputes continue to rise, further revenue opportunities are anticipated.

Lee Chungheon, a researcher at ValueFinder, commented, "Intellectual Discovery has demonstrated its capacity for IP monetization by surpassing last year’s annual operating income in just one quarter. As consolidation via convertible bond-driven equity expansion becomes visible, the more the global semiconductor patent dispute issue comes to the fore, the more positive the impact will be on Xperix’s corporate value."
