Misra, a professor in computer science and electrical and computer engineering and associate dean of research in the College of Engineering, was presented the distinction during the 2026 Intellectual Property Awards held April 16 at NMSU. The recognition was timed to coincide with World Intellectual Property Day, observed annually on April 26 by the World Intellectual Property Organization. The Innovation Fellow designation is awarded to an NMSU faculty member who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing the university's innovation and commercialization ecosystem.

Misra's selection reflects a record of engagement that goes well beyond his own research output. Misra has disclosed six inventions at NMSU and has been awarded three patents, with one of his two pending patents having recently secured a commercial license agreement. His research spans cybersecurity, blockchain, edge computing and resilient systems, and he leads the NSF-funded Distributed Resilient and Emergent-Intelligence-based Additive Manufacturing Center, a statewide research initiative.

He has secured more than $40 million in federal research funding and has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications with over 13,000 international citations. Beyond his own scholarship, Misra has provided consistent mentorship and guidance to Arrowhead Center's Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer, including serving on the Intellectual Property Advisory Council, co-hosting IP Days at the College of Engineering, supporting faculty training and mentorship, collaborating on commercialization funding proposals, and advising on new pilot programs for faculty entrepreneurship.

"Creating the Innovation Fellow award was about sending a message – that faculty who invest in the commercialization of their research and help others do the same deserve to be recognized. That partnership between faculty and our office is what moves ideas out of the lab and into the hands of people who need them," said Patricia Marquez Knighten, director of Arrowhead Center's Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer.

"I am deeply honored to be named NMSU's first Innovation Fellow. Translating research into real-world solutions is at the heart of what we do as faculty, and I am grateful to Arrowhead Center and the IP Office for the support and resources that make that possible. I hope this recognition encourages more of my colleagues to explore the commercialization potential of their own work," Misra said.

The Innovation Fellow award was established to highlight faculty who exemplify NMSU's commitment to moving research from discovery to commercialization, and to inspire broader faculty engagement with intellectual property development. Arrowhead Center's Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer works with NMSU faculty, staff and researchers to protect, manage and commercialize innovations across disciplines.
