AI-Generated 'Simpsons in Kaunas' Video Highlights Intellectual Property Risks for Marketers

An AI-generated video depicting Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa Simpson in the streets of Kaunas, Lithuania, has gone viral on social media, blending global pop culture with local scenery. While the video, posted by the Facebook page “Kaunas Bunda,” was widely praised for its creativity, it has simultaneously raised significant intellectual property (IP) concerns among legal professionals.

Specialists at METIDA, a law firm providing IP services, highlight this case as an example of the growing tension between rapidly advancing AI technologies and established IP laws. The incident underscores how businesses and content creators may underestimate the legal risks involved in using famous characters generated by AI tools.

The Simpsons characters are original artistic works owned by 20th Century Fox, now part of The Walt Disney Company. Their visual likenesses and names are also registered trademarks. Consequently, reproducing or adapting these characters—even through AI—typically constitutes the creation of unauthorized derivative works.

Using such characters to boost engagement, increase page traffic, or enhance brand visibility can be interpreted as exploiting Disney’s brand reputation without permission. This applies regardless of the scale of the content creator or the geographic location.

A common misconception is that large corporations like Disney would not pursue legal action against small or local social media pages. However, rights holders maintain strict, automated global oversight of their intellectual property. METIDA experts note that allowing minor infringements could weaken a rights holder’s ability to enforce against more significant violations.

Disney and similar studios frequently issue takedown notices for even minor online content infringements, including those originating from small markets such as Lithuania. Automated detection technologies enable rapid identification and removal of infringing content, often within minutes, making geography irrelevant.

When rights holders object to unauthorized use of their characters, enforcement typically follows a predictable sequence: social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram remove the content; accounts may receive warnings or face restrictions; and formal demands to cease and desist are issued.

For many small and medium-sized enterprises, the financial and reputational impact of such enforcement actions can be severe.

The emergence of generative AI has introduced new legal uncertainties worldwide. Several entertainment studios are currently pursuing litigation against AI platforms, alleging that these systems were improperly trained on copyrighted materials.

Importantly, the individual or business that prompts, selects, and publishes AI-generated content is responsible for any resulting infringement. AI itself is treated as a tool—similar to Photoshop—not as the creator or liable party.

This case serves as a cautionary tale for marketers, agencies, and social media administrators to carefully consider IP rights when using AI-generated content featuring protected characters or trademarks. Legal advice and clearance remain essential to avoid unintended violations and costly enforcement actions.
