ARIPO Strengthens Intellectual Property Collaboration with Mozambique Following Presidential Meeting

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intellectual property (IP) development in Mozambique following a series of high-level engagements at the Mozambique State House.

ARIPO Director-General Bemanya Twebaze met with Mozambique President Daniel Francisco Chapo to discuss ongoing collaboration aimed at enhancing the country’s IP systems and supporting innovation-driven economic growth.

During the meeting, Twebaze emphasized ARIPO’s dedication to working closely with Mozambique as a key member state in advancing regional cooperation on intellectual property administration.

He noted that Mozambique’s national initiative, Renovar Moçambique, aligns closely with priorities such as industrialization, investment promotion, private-sector growth, reform, stability, and inclusive development.

Twebaze expressed gratitude to President Chapo for recognizing the critical role of intellectual property in national development and for acknowledging ARIPO’s contributions to helping African countries leverage innovation for economic advancement.

Highlighting the strategic importance of IP, Twebaze described it as a vital tool for transforming knowledge, creativity, and innovation into tangible economic value.

He pointed to Mozambique’s significant potential across multiple sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, tourism, manufacturing, energy, and the creative industries, where IP protection can drive growth.

A notable achievement referenced was Mozambique’s distinction as the first ARIPO member state to register a geographical indication, Cabrito de Tete, in June 2020. This registration exemplifies how local heritage can be converted into internationally recognized economic assets through IP protection.

In addition to the presidential meeting, Twebaze engaged with officials from Mozambique’s Instituto da Propriedade Industrial, expressing appreciation for their ongoing commitment to advancing the country’s intellectual property agenda.

ARIPO reaffirmed its readiness to continue collaborating closely with the Government of Mozambique to strengthen IP frameworks and support broader national development objectives.

This renewed partnership underscores ARIPO’s role in fostering regional IP cooperation and supporting member states in harnessing innovation for sustainable economic growth.

Mozambique’s proactive approach to intellectual property protection, combined with ARIPO’s regional expertise, positions the country to capitalize on its diverse economic sectors and cultural assets.

The collaboration between ARIPO and Mozambique serves as a model for leveraging IP systems to promote industrialization, investment, and inclusive development across Africa.

As ARIPO continues to engage with member states, such partnerships are expected to enhance the continent’s innovation ecosystem and contribute to long-term economic resilience.
