Blizzard Initiates Lawsuit Against Project Ascension Over Unauthorized World of Warcraft Server

Blizzard Entertainment has launched a legal action against Project Ascension, an unauthorized private server for its flagship game, World of Warcraft. The lawsuit, filed recently, accuses Project Ascension of engaging in large-scale copyright infringement by distributing pirated copies of Blizzard’s proprietary software.

According to the complaint, Project Ascension has amassed a user base exceeding one million players. Blizzard’s legal team asserts that the defendants have built a profitable business model by capitalizing on the World of Warcraft gaming experience without authorization.

The legal documents describe the defendants’ operations as involving “extensive and severe violation” of Blizzard’s intellectual property rights. Blizzard contends that such activities undermine its classic and community-oriented offerings, degrade the overall World of Warcraft experience, and inflict substantial harm on the company and its creative professionals.

The lawsuit further alleges that Project Ascension’s unauthorized use, modification, and monetization of Blizzard’s intellectual property have caused considerable and lasting damage. This includes lost revenue from former World of Warcraft subscribers who have migrated to the private server to avoid Blizzard’s subscription fees.

In addition to copyright infringement claims, the complaint highlights concerns about the technical infrastructure supporting Project Ascension. It points to the use of “bulletproof” servers located in Russia, operated by the Aeza Group. This group was sanctioned last year for facilitating cybercriminal activities targeting the United States and other nations.

Blizzard’s action underscores the company’s commitment to protecting its intellectual property and preserving the integrity of its gaming ecosystem. The lawsuit aims to halt Project Ascension’s unauthorized operations and seek remedies for the damages incurred.

The case also draws attention to the broader challenges posed by private servers and unauthorized game hosting, which can impact both the economic interests of game developers and the experiences of legitimate players.

As the litigation proceeds, it will be closely watched by stakeholders in the gaming and intellectual property communities for its implications on enforcement strategies against unauthorized game servers.
