Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck has announced the addition of Karla Arias to its Intellectual Property Department as of counsel based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Arias joins the firm bringing specialized expertise in patent and trade secret litigation, as well as patent prosecution, with a focus on clients operating within the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
Airina Rodrigues, cochair of Brownstein’s Intellectual Property Department, emphasized the strategic importance of Arias’s recruitment. Rodrigues stated, “Bringing Karla on board is a key step in our ongoing commitment to deepening our bench in high-stakes intellectual property matters. Her unique combination of scientific rigor and legal insight will be an incredible asset to our clients, particularly those in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.”
Prior to joining Brownstein, Arias served as counsel at Crowell & Moring LLP in Washington, D.C., where she developed significant experience in IP litigation and prosecution. Her dual proficiency in science and law positions her as a valuable resource for clients facing complex patent and trade secret challenges.
Arias’s scientific background is distinguished by a doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Zurich. Her doctoral research focused on the synthesis of supramolecular architectures and the investigation of fluorescent and phosphorescent properties of supramolecular building blocks. This foundation in advanced chemical research informs her legal practice, especially in patent matters involving intricate scientific concepts.
Before embarking on her legal career, Arias was a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University. During this fellowship, she conducted research on the degradation of endocrine-disrupting contaminants in water and explored the formation and reactivity of iron complexes, further deepening her expertise in chemical sciences.
In addition to her Ph.D., Arias earned her Juris Doctor degree from George Mason University and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego. This combination of high-level scientific training and legal education equips her to navigate the intersection of science and intellectual property law effectively.
Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s announcement underscores the firm’s commitment to strengthening its intellectual property practice by integrating professionals with deep technical knowledge and litigation experience. Arias’s arrival is expected to enhance the firm’s ability to serve clients in sectors where scientific innovation and IP protection are critical.
The firm also reminds prospective clients that initial communications do not establish an attorney-client relationship, advising caution in sharing privileged or confidential information prior to formal engagement.
