Bulgaria Emerges as a Key Player in EU Intellectual Property Growth in 2025, EUIPN Report Reveals

The European Union Intellectual Property Network (EUIPN) has released its first-ever EUIPN Trends Report 2025, providing a comprehensive analysis of intellectual property (IP) activity across Europe. The report, as announced by Bulgaria’s Patent Office, examines trends in trademarks, industrial designs, patents, and plant variety rights, contextualized within the broader economic and innovation landscape of the European Union.

According to the report, the European IP system demonstrated remarkable resilience in 2025 despite a challenging economic environment. Trademark applications filed within the EUIPN increased by 12.9% compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 1.6 million classes under the internationally recognized Nice Classification system. This growth rate ranks among the highest globally for leading IP systems.

A key driver of this expansion was the contribution of national intellectual property offices. Applications for national trademarks rose by 13.4% in 2025 relative to 2024, outpacing the 11.8% increase in applications for European Union trademarks. This data highlights the crucial role national offices play as the primary access points to industrial property protection and as essential supporters of business innovation.

The report further emphasizes that national registrations constitute about 70% of all trademark applications filed within the EUIPN. This statistic underscores the complementary relationship between national IP protection frameworks and the broader European Union trademark system.

Bulgaria’s presence in the European IP landscape is particularly notable. The report identifies Bulgarian companies as among the most active users of the European intellectual property system. Together with applicants from France, Bulgarian entities account for nearly one-quarter of all trademark applications submitted by the group of leading applicants, reflecting Bulgaria’s strong engagement in European IP protection.

In the realm of industrial designs, Bulgaria distinguishes itself with a high volume of filings in the packaging and containers category, classified under Locarno Class 09. These applications represent approximately 25% of all industrial design submissions in the country, signaling a focused area of innovation and design activity.

Additionally, Bulgaria maintains a stable share of trademark applications related to services over the 2018-2024 period. This consistency indicates sustained utilization of trademark protections by service-oriented businesses, reinforcing the country’s balanced IP filing profile.

The EUIPN report concludes that intellectual property remains a pivotal tool for driving innovation, competitiveness, and economic growth across Europe. Businesses are increasingly leveraging trademarks, industrial designs, and patents to solidify market presence, safeguard innovations, and generate added value.

Overall, the EUIPN Trends Report 2025 paints a positive picture of the European IP ecosystem’s vitality, with Bulgaria emerging as a significant contributor to this dynamic environment.
