Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CDNS) has revised upward its financial outlook for fiscal year 2026 following a strong second quarter that exceeded analyst expectations. The company attributed the improved forecast to accelerating demand for electronic design automation (EDA) solutions, particularly those related to artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
In the second quarter, Cadence reported revenues of $1.584 billion, marking a 24.2% increase year-over-year and slightly surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.5%. Non-GAAP earnings per share rose 27.9% to $2.11, beating consensus estimates by 2.9%.
All major product segments delivered double-digit growth. Core EDA revenue grew 18%, Systems Design & Analysis surged 37%, and the intellectual property (IP) business expanded 40%. The company’s backlog reached a record $8.1 billion, underscoring strong demand visibility.
Reflecting this momentum, Cadence raised its 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $6.26 billion to $6.34 billion, up from the prior $6.125 billion to $6.225 billion. The non-GAAP earnings forecast was also increased to $8.05 to $8.15 per share from $7.85 to $7.95.
Operating cash flow expectations were lifted to $2 billion, exceeding the previous range of $1.875 billion to $1.975 billion. The company also projected a slight improvement in non-GAAP operating margins, now targeting 43.75% to 44.75%, compared to the earlier 43.5% to 44.5%.
The Systems Design & Analysis segment’s 37% growth was driven by strong demand for AI-enhanced products such as Allegro X AI, 3D-IC, and BETA CAE solutions. The IP business benefited from increased adoption in AI and high-performance computing (HPC) markets.
Hardware demand remained robust among AI and HPC customers. During the quarter, Cadence onboarded 12 new hardware customers and expanded engagements with several hyperscalers and AI innovators.
Cadence highlighted agentic AI as a sustainable growth driver rather than a transient boost. The company has launched the AuraStack AI Super Agent and is expanding its ChipStack and ViraStack offerings. ViraStack has recorded over 25 customer engagements, delivering productivity improvements ranging from 2X to 10X compared to traditional design flows.
Competitive pressures persist, with Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPS) and Siemens AG (OTC: SIEGY) through Siemens EDA providing overlapping EDA, IP, and simulation tools. Cadence must continue investing to maintain its market position.
International operations expose Cadence to currency fluctuations, while capital spending volatility in AI infrastructure presents additional risks. As of June 30, 2026, goodwill and acquired intangible assets accounted for 56.2% of total assets, underscoring execution and financial considerations.
Despite the optimistic outlook, valuation and execution risks remain. Cadence holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), indicating a balanced investment stance rather than a strong buy signal. Its Growth Score is B and Momentum Score is A, reflecting favorable growth and price trends. However, a Value Score of F and overall VGM Score of C suggest caution regarding valuation.
The company’s expanded AI-driven product portfolio and record backlog reinforce its operating narrative, but investors should weigh these positives against competitive dynamics and macroeconomic uncertainties.
