CanVeer Biopharma Advances Global Patent Protection with PCT Filing for AlveoShield™ in Respiratory Disease Treatment

CanVeer Biopharma Inc., a preclinical biopharmaceutical company based in Mississauga, Canada, announced the filing of an international Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) application for its investigational drug candidate AlveoShield™. This milestone reinforces the company’s global intellectual property strategy focused on chronic respiratory diseases with significant unmet medical needs.

The PCT application, entitled “METHODS AND COMPOSITIONS FOR PREVENTING, ATTENUATING OR TREATING LUNG DISEASES AND/OR INJURY,” builds upon a previously filed United States provisional patent. It encompasses CanVeer’s proprietary therapeutic platform and its lead program, AlveoShield™, which is being developed as a potential first-in-class disease-modifying therapy for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).

BPD is a severe respiratory condition primarily affecting preterm newborns who require oxygen support at birth. Currently, no approved disease-modifying therapies exist for BPD, which impacts over 150,000 preterm infants annually in North America and often results in lifelong respiratory complications.

The PCT application was submitted through the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, serving as the Canadian Receiving Office. This filing establishes an international priority date and enables CanVeer to pursue patent protection in more than 150 jurisdictions worldwide. The move aligns with the company’s long-term commercialization and partnering objectives, with all intellectual property rights owned by CanVeer.

In addition to its focus on neonatal respiratory disease, CanVeer is exploring formulation and pulmonary delivery methods to facilitate future clinical translation and commercialization of AlveoShield™. The broader patent strategy also positions the company to extend its therapeutic platform to other respiratory conditions involving lung injury and inflammation.

CanVeer’s global IP efforts have been supported by its acceptance into the Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) program. This initiative provides eligible Ontario companies with up to CAD $300,000 in lifetime support, operating under an 80% provincial cost-sharing model for intellectual property activities. The funding assists with international patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate analyses, competitive IP landscaping, and commercialization-related legal services.

Sherif Louis, CEO of CanVeer, emphasized the significance of the PCT filing: “The filing of our international PCT application represents an important milestone in CanVeer’s commercial strategy as we continue advancing AlveoShield™ towards the clinic. Establishing international priority rights empowers our long-term objective of protecting the program and assures global market potential and exclusivity.”

Behzad Yeganeh, CSO of CanVeer and co-inventor of the technology, highlighted the role of IPON and legal counsel in the process: “Support from IPON has played an important role in accelerating the development of our global intellectual property strategy. Combined with the guidance of our IP Counsel, SMART & BIGGAR, this PCT filing further strengthens the patent foundation supporting the future clinical and commercial development of AlveoShield™ and our broader respiratory therapeutic platform.”

CanVeer Biopharma remains a privately held company dedicated to advancing innovative therapeutics for chronic diseases with high unmet needs. Its lead program, AlveoShield™, targets biological pathways underlying lung injury to promote normal lung development in preterm infants suffering from BPD.
